Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1,500 years ago.

Located on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle, once home to the Earls of Fife.

The Tour: The tour covers 5,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave, Doo Cave, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave.

This is a coastal landscape with some uneven ground and includes many steps. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing. A full tour to the caves and back is one mile long and usually lasts around an hour and a half.

However, if you want to avoid steps and would prefer a shorter route, please get in touch to find out about one of our accessible tours which are particularly suitable for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

We can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking. Book here.

The Museum: You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm.

As well as telling the story of the caves, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles.

Toilet facilities and refreshments are available in the Museum.

Parking: Please note that there is no on-site parking in The Haugh, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. We can however arrange disabled parking at the Visitor Centre on request.

Donations: All tours are given free of charge, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. Your donations enable us to continue protecting the site so that it can to be enjoyed into the future.
