The 1821 Category B listed Well House in Bridge of Allan hides a history of both the exploitation of copper ore and mineral water, and is one of the earliest surviving buildings associated with the spa town of Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire. Without this little building Bridge of Allan wouldn’t be what it is today.
Head along to this Doors Open Day and Scottish Geology Festival event to find out more about the fascinating history of the site from members of the Bridge of Allan Well House Restoration Project team – look down the 35m mine shaft, see mining artefacts, speak to ex-miners, and learn about the geology of Airthrey Copper Mine and the surrounding area.
The new Eco-museum of Scottish Mining Landscapes Airthrey Copper Mine trail will also be launched at the event. To celebrate, Dr Catherine Mills and Dr Katie Strang will be leading guided walks to introduce the new route and explore the industrial heritage around Mine Woods.
Tours will run at 11am and 3pm, both Saturday and Sunday. No booking required, but spaces are limited so arrive in plenty time. The walk will last about an hour and requires ascending some steep (and often muddy!) paths and stairs, so appropriate walking boots and outdoor clothing are advised. For those unable to manage the walk we can show you how to access the trail online and we will also have paper copies on the day. Catherine and Katie will be around the rest of the weekend to answer questions.
