Through detailed study of geological specimens and observations gathered in the field, Hutton learned to “read” the rocks – revealing evidence of immense spans of time, erosion, and renewal.
This new exhibition at National Museums Scotland explores how the careful study of both dramatic landscapes and small rock samples led Hutton to develop his groundbreaking Theory of the Earth, laying the foundations for our modern understanding of geology and deep time.
