In order to help celebrate Hutton’s Tercentenary, a group of church bell ringers from various parts of England and Scotland will meet on Wednesday 3rd June to ring the eight bells at Haddington church, East Lothian. The ringing will start at about 10.30am and continue without a break for three hours. This special type of performance is known as a peal, and the ringers have to ring in time with each other and memorise what they’re doing, as no ‘music’ or aide-memoires are allowed in the ringing room.
The ringers who are taking part have varied professional and amateur interests in geology, rural land use and medicine, so we properly reflect Hutton’s credentials as the leading Scottish Enlightenment polymath.
