Join geologists Alison Tymon and Ann Kellie for an exploration of the geological history of St Abbs.
Starney Bay is a quiet cove away from the main footpaths to St Abb’s Head. The geology is complex as the bay lies on the junction between the St Abbs volcanic vent and the local country rocks, so much alteration of the rocks has taken place. The pebbles on the shingle beach are spectacularly different as a result.
Meet at the viewpoint outside the St Abbs Visitor Centre, at the top of the hill near the village. NB. The NTS also has a visitor centre before you reach the village where parking is available, from where you can follow the path alongside the road to the Visitor Centre. There are car parks in the village and a bus service from Berwick (235).
The route is a 1 km walk along the coastal footpath leads to a steep path down the bay, with rocks and shingle on the beach.
Good footwear is essential. Families and dogs are welcome. Bring magnifying glasses or hand lenses for a detailed look at the pebbles.
