In 1820, Hugh Miller discovered the world of geology whilst working as a stonemason on the Black Isle. Since then, geologists both amateur and professional have flocked to Cromarty to marvel at the amazing rocks, fossils, minerals, and landscapes of the coastline. Over 200 years since Miller entered that world, join us over the Scottish Geology Festival and let us show off why geology rocks on Cromarty beach!
• Travel across one billion years’ worth of history in the span of around ninety minutes
• Discover how volcanic activity, ice ages, and colliding continents have shaped this famous stretch of coastline
• Although famed for its fossils, get ready to uncover the other amazing rocks and minerals found on Cromarty beach
This tour will not focus on the fossils of Cromarty. If you would like to learn about them, we recommend booking on one of our Fossil Walks.
Adults – £10 plus booking fees
Concessions (student, over 60s) – £8.00 plus booking fees

• Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.
• As Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor, waterproof footwear
• Tours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. Toilet facilities are available at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum
• Only service and guide dogs are permitted on our Fossil Walks
• All attendees under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian and cannot be left unattended during the walks.
Our introductory geology walk will be operating in compliance with The Code for Geological Fieldwork created by the Geologist’s Association. Any fossils discovered on this walk will remain on the beach
