Explore the hidden world of ancient geology in the heart of Glasgow!

Join Katie Strang, Hunterian Curator of Rocks and Minerals, for a guided urban geology walk, uncovering the the amazing stories behind the rocks that make up the University of Glasgow’s Gilmorehill Campus.

From carboniferous sandstone and Jurassic limestone, to stunning pink granites and 400-million-year-old fossil fish in the pavements, discover a remarkable range of rocks that tell the story of Earth’s history over hundreds of millions of years.

This fun and interactive walk is perfect for curious explorers who want to explore the amazing stories behind the rocks that make up our city.

Additional Information

The route will start at the University of Glasgow Gilbert Scott Building and will mostly follow pavements and established paths around the main campus, but there are some moderate inclines and uneven/cobbled paths.

We will look at points of interest around the Gilbert Scott Building and Professor’s Square, then onto University Avenue and St Mungo’s Square, finishing up on Dumbarton Road outside the Adam Smith Business School.

There are some sections with steps but alternative lift access is available (via lift in the Gilbert Scott Building and lift in the Adam Smith Business School).
