Join Angus Miller from Geowalks for a guided walk exploring the igneous rocks of Edinburgh at Blackford and Braid Hills. This circuit over two of Edinburgh’s Seven Hills will explore the early volcanic history of Edinburgh. These hills are the remains of silica-rich lava flows and ash layers that represent a very explosive and dramatic episode of volcanic activity 410 million years ago. Blackford Hill is made of andesite, and the Braid Hills are made of an unusual type of igneous rock, trachyte, both formed during surface volcanic activity. These layers are part of a sequence of igneous rocks that continues into the Pentland Hills.
