Mineral Minds: Orkney Geologists Under the Microscope

Stromness Museum’s summer exhibition centres on the work of two under-celebrated geologists: Ted Kellock and Matthew Forster Heddle. Ted Kellock’s collection of over 4000 thin section rock slides has been the subject of a year-long project to digitise the catalogue, with help from volunteers to transcribe and photograph the slides. The exhibition explains the background to the global collection and showcases beautiful photography of slides viewed under cross-polarized light. The exhibition also features Matthew Forster Heddle, arguably Scotland’s greatest ever mineralogist, who was born and brought up in Orkney. A sample of his collection has been loaned from the National Museum of Scotland for the exhibition. Lastly, the exhibition also contains a section curated by Dounby Primary school p6/7. They share their experiences of a creative project, in which they worked with Sheila Fleet, renowned jeweller and Kirsteen Stewart, award-winning textile designer.
