Join the ‘Scottish Mining Landscapes’ team in association with Forestry and Land Scotland for a free walk exploring the geology, ecology, and landscape of the former opencast coaling site at Spireslack, Glenbuck East Ayrshire followed by a place making art workshop.

The Ponesk/Spireslack open cast coaling site was abandoned when Scottish Coal went into liquidation in April 2013. Since then, the site has been reprofiled, made safe and access has been improved with ongoing remediation and the establishment of woodland. The Spireslack void ( 85m depth) reveals stunning exposures of carboniferous geology.

Participants in this walk and workshop will be invited to rediscover this former extractive landscape through the geology, ecology and place making art activities (cyanotype prints). Led by members of the National Lottery Heritage Funded Eco-Museum of Scottish Mining Landscapes team, Katie Strang (Scottish Geology Trust), Matt Harding (Botanical Society of Britian and Ireland) and Yvonne Weighand Lyle (YWL Studios) in association with the Foresty and Land Scotland Community Ranger Roddy McTavish.
