At Auchmithie you can see incredible examples of sandstone conglomerate cliffs formed by a giant Mississippi sized river that once flowed over vast parts of the land over 370 million years ago. As part of the Scottish Geology Festival 2025, The Scottish Geology Trust, supported by Auchmithie Village Hall, are presenting a display of local rocks and fossils!

There will be accessible and informative displays of local stones in Auchmithie Village Hall on both Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September.  There will also be a display of minerals that fluoresce under UV light! This is a drop in event from 11am – 4pm each day.

There will also be a talk on “The Geology of the World in 40 mins”, given at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Village Hall.

For the more adventurous you can head down to the beach for a pebble event both days to meet with geologists and SGT volunteers. You’ll be able to talk to them about the type of stones found on the beach and the stories behind how they were formed. The beach event is a drop-in event between 11am – 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday, there is no need to book, but get in touch with festival@scottishgeologytrust.org if you have any questions. In the event of bad weather, the event may be cancelled or postponed – please check with the organiser on the day.

The road to the hall is smooth and okay for wheelchairs, but the actual beach is not wheelchair accessible. There is also access to the beach via 37 steps from the middle of the village. These are steep and can be slippery when wet, sensible footwear is recommended. Children very welcome, but must be supervised by an adult at all times.
