We did it! We are going to build the Deep Time Trail at Siccar Point!

Thank you so much to everyone who donated, and everyone who supported the campaign by sharing it. We couldn’t be doing this without you.

We raised a whopping £61,488 on the Crowdfunder platform. We (SGT and Edinburgh Geolsoc) also received an additional £18,173 in offline donations, and are expecting ~£7000 in gift aid, bringing the Crowdfunder total to over £86,500. So we have surpassed our fundraising target, and also we have been successful in receiving a grant of £72,500 from a local community fund.

The overall budget and design plans are currently being finalised, but we already know that we have raised enough money to fulfil our vision and to be able to start work on further phases of activity at Siccar Point.

In case you didn’t catch it on social media last week, you might like to catch up with this video of the CMC Associates team talking about their design process and vision for the Deep Time Trail: CMC Video on Facebook | CMC Video on LinkedIn.

So what happens next?

  • The campaign is officially over, but this project https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/siccar-point is staying open, meaning we can continue to receive donations – we just can’t offer rewards.
  • We’ll be in touch with updates as the project progresses.
  • We plan to have the Deep Time Trail completed by the end of April 2026, with the official opening on 29th May, in time for Hutton’s 300th birthday.
  • There are so many exciting events in the pipeline to celebrate Hutton’s Tercentenary in 2026. Sign up to the mailing list at https://james-hutton.org/ to stay in the loop.
  • The Scottish Geology Festival will run in June this year, with a focus on celebrating Deep Time and Hutton’s legacy. If you would like to run a festival event, please get in touch. Events don’t have to be in Scotland.
  • If you want to receive email updates about the Scottish Geology Festival, please sign up to the Scottish Geology Trust Mailing list at https://www.scottishgeologytrust.org/support-us/

Thank you, again, from the bottom of our hearts. This is such an important, and long-overdue project and we are so excited that it is finally going to happen.

Steph and Angus, on behalf of everyone at the Scottish Geology Trust and Edinburgh Geological Society
