Approximately 30 million years of geological time is missing from the rocks exposed at Whiting Ness!

Join geologists from the British Geological Survey on Saturday the 14th September at 3pm for a walk to investigate and understand this intriguing geological site.

The sea-cliffs at Whiting Ness expose an impressive angular unconformity – a break in geological time that here represents a halt in the laying down of ancient river-rocks. During the walk we will investigate what happened to create this unconformity as we trace the topography of the landscape preserved in the cliffs, consider the origin of the river sediments and look for ancient soils preserved in the rock.

British Geological Survey geologists are currently re-surveying the geological maps of the Strathmore area, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the process of geological surveying and its applications.

Please note:

• Not suitable for participants under 12 years old.
• The walk will take us along a rocky foreshore and is timed for a falling tide. The rocks will be undulating and slippery in many areas, appropriate footwear must be worn and care must be taken at all times.
• The walk will involve looking at cliff sections, hard hats will be provided.
• The site is exposed and clothing appropriate for the weather conditions is required, note that coastal winds can be cool and warm clothes may be required.
• No dogs please.
