How does climate change work? How big of a deal is it? And can anything we do really help fix it?
Join climate scientist Dr James Rae for this interactive talk to explore these big questions using live experiments, virtual reality, and a few climate-themed dance moves!
Using examples from climate change in the geological past, we’ll explore the simple underlying science of why the climate is changing, the serious impacts this has on society, and how this planetary problem can be solved to ensure a better future.

Dr James Rae, Reader in Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of St Andrews
Dr James Rae is a climate scientist and geochemist in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. A geologist by training, much of Dr Rae’s work investigates Earth’s climate history, using the chemical fingerprints of past climates encoded in fossils, minerals, and ice, measured in his world-leading laboratory at St Andrews. By better understanding fundamental changes in CO2 and climate in the past, including the drivers of the ice ages and the warmer worlds of the dinosaurs, Dr Rae’s research helps illuminate an uncertain future. His work has been recognised with honours including the Outstanding Young Scientist award from the European Geosciences Union, major funding awards, and election to the Young Academy of Scotland.
