SUMMARY:Guided walk: Hutton’s Coast – the journey to Siccar Point
DESCRIPTION:Join Angus Miller from Geowalks for a guided walk to Siccar Point. It is Scotland’s most important geological site\, but Siccar Point is tucked away on the rugged coastline of the Scottish Borders\, a hidden gem with beautiful coastal scenery and a rich geological story. \nWe’ll get to the point by following James Hutton’s journey along the coast from Cockburnspath\, gradually travelling back in time through three periods of contrasting sedimentary rocks. This is a varied walk along the coastal path from Cockburnspath to Pease Bay and on to the viewpoint above Siccar Point. The rocks lie at the foot of a steep grassy slope; it is not essential to descend all the way down the slope to see the key features. Distance 6km one-way. \nCost: £20\, free for young people. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! SUMMARY:Public Lecture: The NW Highlands Controversy
DESCRIPTION:The NW Highlands Controversy: geology\, geologists and social climbing in Victorian times – Talk by Peter Gutteridge\nIn 1854\, the discovery of fossils near Durness on the north coast of Scotland triggered one of the bitterest scientific controversies of Victorian times. Geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchsion\, director of the Geological Survey\, claimed that the fossils proved that much of NW Scotland was a conformable sequence of rocks belonging to his Silurian system. But geologist James Nicol of Aberdeen University\, suggested that the fossils were younger and went on to suggest that the geological succession was broken by a series of major faults. \nIn 1860\, Murchison invited the ambitious\, young survey geologist Archibald Geikie\, on a tour of NW Scotland to pass on his knowledge of the geology. During the 1860s\, Geikie rose through the ranks of the Geological Survey with Murchison’s support\, eventually taking up the chair of Geology at the University of Edinburgh\, endowed for him by Murchison\, in 1871. \nAgainst an increasing tide of scientific dissent during the 1870s\, Geikie continued to support Murchison’s view on the geology of NW Scotland. In 1883\, Geikie\, now Director of the Geological Survey\, assembled a team of Survey geologists to map NW Scotland\, who eventually showed that Murchison was wrong. \nJoin Geologist Peter Gutteridge for this evening special interest lecture. \nCost: £4. DESCRIPTION:The West of Scotland Mineral and Lapidary Society was founded in 1966 by a group of people who had a common interest in collecting\, studying\, and polishing semi-precious stones. For the last 25 years the Society’s clubroom has been based in Knightswood Community Centre\, Knightswood\, Glasgow\, G13 3DD. \nThe primary aim of the Society is to foster an interest in natural minerals\, Lapidary (the cutting\, shaping\, and polishing of stones) and in the craftmanship required both for lapidary and its associated crafts on a non-commercial basis. The Society has now extended its skillset to include enamelling and some members silversmith to set their stones. \nTo celebrate this year’s Scottish Geology Festival\, the WSMLS are opening their workshop to interested visitors on the above dates and times when members are working. You can head along to discover the art of lapidary and find out how to cut\, shape\, and polish beautiful stones and gems. DESCRIPTION:In early 2024\, Dingwall Museum undertook an assessment and rationalisation of their collections and uncovered a series of fossils that came from the North and East coasts of the Black Isle. SUMMARY:Wemyss Caves Pictish Carvings - Full Guided Tour and Museum
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1\,500 years ago. \nLocated on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth\, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols\, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle\, once home to the Earls of Fife. \nThe Tour: The tour covers 5\,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave\, Doo Cave\, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave. \nThis is a coastal landscape with some uneven ground and includes many steps. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing. A full tour to the caves and back is one mile long and usually lasts around an hour and a half. \nHowever\, if you want to avoid steps and would prefer a shorter route\, please get in touch to find out about one of our accessible tours which are particularly suitable for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. \nWe can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking. Book here. \nThe Museum: You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum\, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour\, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm. \nAs well as telling the story of the caves\, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history\, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles. \nToilet facilities and refreshments are available in the Museum. \nParking: Please note that there is no on-site parking in The Haugh\, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes\, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. We can however arrange disabled parking at the Visitor Centre on request. \nDonations: All tours are given free of charge\, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. DESCRIPTION:Scotland has been home to many pioneering women geologists\, whose important work has helped us to understand the Earth. Despite this the history of geology has largely been told through the accomplishments of male scientists. The women have often gone unacknowledged and their contributions have been lost to history. \nUntil very recently\, women with an interest in geology had to fight harder than their male contemporaries for access to education and equal recognition. Those who managed to prosper were usually privileged or married into privilege. Many were expected to give up their jobs if they married\, so remained single. \nThis display explores the stories and scientific achievements of some of the pioneering women in Scottish geology\, and their contributions to The Hunterian’s collections. Running from 26th August 2024 – 17th March 2025.  \n“Women on the Rocks” is a new display in Kelvin Hall. SUMMARY:Coalscapes IV Walk and Workshop\, Arniston Bing\, Gorebridge\, Midlothian.
DESCRIPTION:The Arniston Coal Company was formed in 1876 and operated two pits\, the Gore and the Emily\, producing around 950 tons of Gas\, House and Steam coals per day and employing around 970 employees. The colliery closed in 1962 having created two substantial waste tips. The larger ‘south’ bing (now flattened and repurposed as playing fields) and the ‘north’\, a conical and naturally regenerated waste tip masquerading as a small\, wooded hill. \nParticipants in this walk and workshop will be invited to explore this post-industrial landscape through the geology\, ecology and place making art activities (cyanotype printing). Led by members of the National Lottery Heritage Funded Eco-Museum of Scottish Mining Landscapes team\, Katie Strang (Scottish Geology Trust)\, Matt Harding (Botanical Society of Britian and Ireland) and Yvonne Weighand Lyle (YWL Studios). \nGeology/Ecology Walk: A 3.5km round walk (around 90 mins)\, primarily grassed paths over uneven ground with some gentle slopes that can be muddy after rain. The path to the top of the north bing is extremely steep and is optional. Please be aware of your level of fitness and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. (There is an option to either arrive later or to remain with Yvonne if you just wish to join the outdoor art workshop). \nArt Workshop: You will gather botanical and geological materials during your walk\, (can be collected for you if you do not participate in the walk)\, these will be used to create cyanotypes – a kind of photographic image process and/or painted pebbles. Artist Yvonne Weighand Lyle will provide the artistic materials\, equipment and camping stools. She will guide participants through the creative processes\, as a way to engage with the landscape and create new visual memories of it. The workshop duration is also planned for around 90mins. \nMeeting point and parking at the Gorebridge Beacon\, Hunterfield Road\, Gorebridge\, EH23 4TT. \nPlease bring a packed lunch. \nToilets are available at the Beacon 9am -2pm. \nNot suitable for under 18 years of age. \nFree – booking essential. DESCRIPTION:The Hunterian\, Kelvin Hall and the Scottish Geology Trust are proud to host Women on the Rocks in Glasgow and online on Wednesday the 28th August 2024 at 6:30pm\, with Dr Neil Clark (Hunterian)\, Dr Katie Strang (Hunterian and SGT)\, Ann Cameron (NLS) and guests. \nScotland has been home to many pioneering women geologists whose important work has helped us to understand the Earth. Despite this\, the history of geology has largely been told through the accomplishments of men\, and many women have gone unacknowledged and their contributions have been lost to history. \nJoin us at the 2024 Scottish Geology Festival launch event in Kelvin Hall as we explore some of the lost stories of Women in geology with Neil\, Katie and Ann as they highlight some of the pioneering women who have made contributions to the Hunterian collections\, including Elizabeth Gray – Scotland’s Mary Anning. \nThe event will be held in-person at Kelvin Hall\, 1445 Argyle St\, Glasgow G3 8AW\, and online via Zoom. \nThe National Library of Scotland’s Moving Image Archive will also be open to the public from 1:30pm – 8pm. DESCRIPTION:The Lost Villages of East Ayrshire Exhibition  – National Mining Museum Scotland.\nSat 03 Aug – Sat 26 Oct. 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. \n‘The ‘miners’ row villages’ in the Ayrshire coalfield are a remarkable and distinctive man-made feature in the landscape and transformed the upland areas where they were set. The Lost Villages of East Ayrshire exhibition is based on an oral history project which gathered voices from the mining communities of East Ayrshire. It features stories from villagers about domestic life\, work and leisure within the Ayrshire coalfield. The exhibition also offers some insights into de-industrialisation and the legacy of the row villages for the the communities today. \nWhilst much of the physical evidence of these villages are mostly gone\, there are still surviving traces of them but more importantly they live on in the memories of the former villages and their families. They are of real importance not only to the Cumnock and Doon Valley area\, but to the industrial history\, social and cultural history and heritage of Scotland as a whole. \nThe exhibition was developed in partnership with East Ayrshire Leisure. The Lost Villages was an oral history project by the Scottish Oral History Centre at the University of Strathclyde\, led by researchers Prof Arthur McIvor and Dr Yvonne McFadden. The project was part of the Coalfields Community Partnership funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Environment Scotland.’ \nThe exhibition is situated in the Special Exhibition Gallery.  Entry is FREE. \nVenue: National Mining Museum Scotland\, Lady Victoria Colliery\, Newtongrange\, Midlothian\, EH22 4QN \n\n\n \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2024\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust.
