DESCRIPTION:‘Stone Drawings’ by Shapes of Sounds\, at Nordic Music Days festival – CCA\, Glasgow 31 October\n\n\n\n\nStone has been the canvas of storytelling since humans developed visual language\, but could we change perspective and instead listen to the stone? What shared stories can we listen to through the sounds of stones?\n\n\nWith the instrumentation of Swedish and Scottish sandstone\, and live-painting with sand and water\, Swedish composer and sound artist Alexandra Nilsson together with Scottish visual artist Jenny Soep\, will explore this question in their new audiovisual work – Stone Drawings.\n\n\nAlexandra Nilsson has been exploring the sonic qualities of different types of stones for some years with her project FOSSIL. DESCRIPTION:Join the Hugh Miller Birthplace Museum for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. DESCRIPTION:A informal field trip followed by an afternoon meeting\, focused on Local Geodiversity Sites and the recently updated guidance on Establishing and Managing Local Nature Conservation Site Systems. This gathering\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust’s Geosites project and Lothian and Borders GeoConservation\, will be an opportunity to gather and discuss local geosites\, with a particular focus on how we can support and expand on existing local site networks. It will be of interest and useful to anyone interested in geology based anywhere in Scotland and particularly for people who are in Local Authority areas that haven’t got many\, or any\, existing Local Geodiversity Sites. \nVenue: Slateford\, west Edinburgh. \nProgramme: \nInformal Field Trip @ the Water of Leith \n10:00 Meet at the cafe of the Water of Leith Visitor Centre (24 Lanark Road\, Edinburgh\, EH14 1TQ) for coffee\, followed by a short field trip to visit two Local Geodiversity Sites: Water of Leith: Craiglockhart and Colinton Dells and Craiglockhart Hill. SUMMARY:James Hutton Exhibition and Event: The Fundamentals of Geology
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition celebrates the work of James Hutton who farmed at Slighhouses\, Scottish Borders\, during the eighteenth century.  By knowing the soils\, landscapes and the cliffs of Berwickshire\, James Hutton realised that geological time was far longer than the timeline previously suggested.  At Siccar Point on the Berwickshire coast he found evidence in the rocks that laid the foundations for his insight into deep time. \nHead along to The Hippodrome on Saturday 5th October from 11.00 – 4.00 for the opportunity to look at examples of rocks\, fossils and minerals which form the building blocks of geological features\, as well as pebbles and sand samples from local beaches. \nDo bring items from your geology collection if you are unsure of their identification and we will try to help you! \nVenue: The Hippodrome\, Harbour Road\, Eyemouth. DESCRIPTION:This online talk by Prof Patrick Corbett and poetry readings by Dr Alyson Hallett of the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics is a joint session of the Scottish Geology Trust and the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics. \nPatrick will present the geological foundations for geopoetics\, the starting point in any place\, as expressed in the writings of the poet-philosopher Kenneth White\, who founded the International Institute of Geopoetics in France in 1989. Alyson will read poetry to include poems drawn from her collection from a residency in Heriot-Watt/BGS Tilted Ground and talk about her recent project in the Geology Department at the University of Bristol. The background geology to a place\, whether the landscape\, building  materials or past/present industrial sites\, gives inspiration to poets and stirs the imagination of geologists. \nThe presenters have also recently attended the Geological Society’s Earth’s Canvas Conference in September 2024 – a focus for creativity in geoscience – an event that fostered greater engagement between artists and earth scientists. SUMMARY:Evening Lecture: Long Live Mammals in the Time of Dinosaurs with Dr Elsa Panciroli
DESCRIPTION:Join palaeontologist and author Dr Elsa Panciroli on Wednesday the 2nd October\, 6-8pm\, at the Hunterian Museum to hear about her groundbreaking research on fossils from Skye! \nDiscoveries of fossils from the Isle of Skye are revealing new information about the origin and evolution of multiple small vertebrate animal groups. The most recent of these finds has shown that mammals – which thrived alongside the dinosaurs – lived longer and grew more slowly in the Jurassic than similar sized mammals do today. \nWork led by Dr Panciroli has revealed new information about mammal growth and development\, and reconstructed the most complete Mesozoic mammal skeletons known from the UK\, including the first skeleton of a juvenile mammal from this time period. The fossils come from the Kilmaluag Formation\, which represents a Middle Jurassic freshwater lagoon environment\, dated to approximately 166 Ma. SUMMARY:Wemyss Caves Pictish Carvings - Full Guided Tour and Museum
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1\,500 years ago. \nLocated on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth\, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols\, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle\, once home to the Earls of Fife. \nThe Tour: The tour covers 5\,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave\, Doo Cave\, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave. \nThis is a coastal landscape with some uneven ground and includes many steps. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing. A full tour to the caves and back is one mile long and usually lasts around an hour and a half. \nHowever\, if you want to avoid steps and would prefer a shorter route\, please get in touch to find out about one of our accessible tours which are particularly suitable for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. \nWe can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking. Book here. \nThe Museum: You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum\, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour\, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm. \nAs well as telling the story of the caves\, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history\, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles. \nToilet facilities and refreshments are available in the Museum. \nParking: Please note that there is no on-site parking in The Haugh\, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes\, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. We can however arrange disabled parking at the Visitor Centre on request. \nDonations: All tours are given free of charge\, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to discover Edinburgh’s volcano during your walk in Holyrood Park! \nLearn about the 340 million year history of Arthur’s Seat\, from tropical lagoons to volcanic eruptions and glacial erosion. At this drop-in event\, SGT geologists will interpret the landscape and explain the geology which creates this unique feature in the heart of the city. Visit our stand adjacent to the Holyrood Palace carpark and learn about fossils originating from the time that the Arthur’s Seat volcano was erupting. Then pick up a map of the park\, and look out for our volunteers (wearing blue tee shirts) who will be stationed at various localities and will be able to explain the geological features found at each location. \nAs this is a self-guided event\, open to anyone visiting the park\, visitors should consider route planning appropriate to their level of ability and the weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:Join the Hugh Miller Birthplace Museum for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. SUMMARY:Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club - Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! The Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival on Saturdays 7th\, 14th\, 21st and 28th September between 10am – 4pm and also on Tuesdays 3rd\, 10th\, 17th\, and 24th. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.\nVisitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agate\, and with over 5000 specimens in the collection\, large examples are shown and an A to Z of many Scottish minerals. \nMembers range from 0 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.\nAccess – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.\nToilets – Male\, female and disabled.\nParking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk).\nNearest buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2024\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. SUMMARY:Scottish Rocks\, Minerals and Fossils at the Scottish Deer Centre and Wildlife Park
DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s Scottish Geology Festival\, the Scottish Deer Centre and Wildlife Park will be holding a rock\, mineral and fossil weekend. In conjunction with the Scottish Geology Trust\, a wide range of examples of what can be found in Scotland will be displayed\, much of it from local sources. Fossils older than dinosaurs\, agates from local beaches and fields and minerals that fluoresce under ultraviolet light. \nVolunteers from the Scottish Geology Trust will be available for advice and guidance on Saturday the 28th and Sunday the 29th September from 10am-4pm. Bring your own rocks along for show and tell\, or identification. \nExcellent parking and disabled access. Easy walking\, 200-300 metres\, cafe and toilets. \nDrop-in event\, no booking required. It’s a subterranean odyssey exploring the natural and man-made heritage under our feet\, from natural caves to hollow mountains for hydro power generation\, from railway tunnels to underground tanks and bunkers and from fossils to the mining of fossil fuels. \nBruce Keith is a retired chartered surveyor and chartered environmentalist. He started his career on several Aberdeenshire estates before joining the Department of Agriculture in Edinburgh. In 1996 he migrated south of the border as Chief Surveyor with English Nature.
