DESCRIPTION:This online talk by Prof Patrick Corbett and poetry readings by Dr Alyson Hallett of the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics is a joint session of the Scottish Geology Trust and the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics. \nPatrick will present the geological foundations for geopoetics\, the starting point in any place\, as expressed in the writings of the poet-philosopher Kenneth White\, who founded the International Institute of Geopoetics in France in 1989. Alyson will read poetry to include poems drawn from her collection from a residency in Heriot-Watt/BGS Tilted Ground and talk about her recent project in the Geology Department at the University of Bristol. The background geology to a place\, whether the landscape\, building  materials or past/present industrial sites\, gives inspiration to poets and stirs the imagination of geologists. \nThe presenters have also recently attended the Geological Society’s Earth’s Canvas Conference in September 2024 – a focus for creativity in geoscience – an event that fostered greater engagement between artists and earth scientists. SUMMARY:Evening Lecture: Long Live Mammals in the Time of Dinosaurs with Dr Elsa Panciroli
DESCRIPTION:Join palaeontologist and author Dr Elsa Panciroli on Wednesday the 2nd October\, 6-8pm\, at the Hunterian Museum to hear about her groundbreaking research on fossils from Skye! \nDiscoveries of fossils from the Isle of Skye are revealing new information about the origin and evolution of multiple small vertebrate animal groups. The most recent of these finds has shown that mammals – which thrived alongside the dinosaurs – lived longer and grew more slowly in the Jurassic than similar sized mammals do today. \nWork led by Dr Panciroli has revealed new information about mammal growth and development\, and reconstructed the most complete Mesozoic mammal skeletons known from the UK\, including the first skeleton of a juvenile mammal from this time period. The fossils come from the Kilmaluag Formation\, which represents a Middle Jurassic freshwater lagoon environment\, dated to approximately 166 Ma. SUMMARY:Wemyss Caves Pictish Carvings - Full Guided Tour and Museum
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1\,500 years ago. \nLocated on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth\, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols\, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle\, once home to the Earls of Fife. \nThe Tour: The tour covers 5\,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave\, Doo Cave\, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave. \nThis is a coastal landscape with some uneven ground and includes many steps. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing. A full tour to the caves and back is one mile long and usually lasts around an hour and a half. \nHowever\, if you want to avoid steps and would prefer a shorter route\, please get in touch to find out about one of our accessible tours which are particularly suitable for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. \nWe can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking. Book here. \nThe Museum: You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum\, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour\, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm. \nAs well as telling the story of the caves\, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history\, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles. \nToilet facilities and refreshments are available in the Museum. \nParking: Please note that there is no on-site parking in The Haugh\, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes\, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. We can however arrange disabled parking at the Visitor Centre on request. \nDonations: All tours are given free of charge\, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to discover Edinburgh’s volcano during your walk in Holyrood Park! \nLearn about the 340 million year history of Arthur’s Seat\, from tropical lagoons to volcanic eruptions and glacial erosion. At this drop-in event\, SGT geologists will interpret the landscape and explain the geology which creates this unique feature in the heart of the city. Visit our stand adjacent to the Holyrood Palace carpark and learn about fossils originating from the time that the Arthur’s Seat volcano was erupting. Then pick up a map of the park\, and look out for our volunteers (wearing blue tee shirts) who will be stationed at various localities and will be able to explain the geological features found at each location. \nAs this is a self-guided event\, open to anyone visiting the park\, visitors should consider route planning appropriate to their level of ability and the weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:Join the Hugh Miller Birthplace Museum for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. Now is your chance to find out! SUMMARY:Coalscapes V Walk and Workshop\, Nethercroy Colliery\, Croy Hill
DESCRIPTION:Croy Hill (managed by Forestry and Land Scotland) is associated with the some of the best preserved sections of the Antonine Wall but around 100 years ago this was heavily industrialised site occupied by the Carron Iron Company’s Nethercroy Colliery and Coke Works and its associated transport infrastructure. The colliery closed in 1914. Although many of the surface buildings were demolished and the site has been comprehensively reclaimed by nature\, barely visible are the intriguing and incomplete remains of the former structures\, interspersed with hard standing\, building rubble and colliery waste. \nParticipants in this walk and workshop will be invited to rediscover this post-industrial landscape through the geology\, ecology and place making art activities (cyanotype prints). Led by members of the National Lottery Heritage Funded Eco-Museum of Scottish Mining Landscapes team\, Katie Strang (Scottish Geology Trust)\, Matt Harding (Botanical Society of Britian and Ireland) and Yvonne Weighand Lyle (YWL Studios) in association with Forestry and Land Scotland . \nGeology/Ecology Walk: A 4km round walk (around 90 mins)\, primarily woodland and gravel paths over uneven ground with some slopes that can be muddy after rain. Please be aware of your level of fitness and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. \nArt Workshop: You will gather botanical materials during your walk\, (can be collected for you if you do not participate in the walk)\, these will be used to create cyanotypes – a kind of photographic image process. Artist Yvonne Weighand Lyle will provide the artistic materials\, equipment and camping stools. She will guide participants through the creative processes\, as a way to engage with the landscape and create new visual memories of it. The workshop duration is also planned for around 90mins. \nMeeting point and parking will be advised. \nPlease bring a packed lunch. \nNot suitable for under 18 years of age. \nFree – booking essential. SUMMARY:Online Seminar: Siccar Point
DESCRIPTION:Siccar Point is Scotland’s most famous geosite\, known around the world as the most important unconformity visited by James Hutton\, and used by him to illustrate his ‘theory of the Earth’. Hutton’s friend\, John Playfair\, said of their visit in 1788 that ‘the mind seemed to grow giddy by looking so far into the abyss of time’. Siccar Point is located on the east coast of the Scottish Borders\, not far from the village of Cockburnspath and close to major walking trails. \nDespite its celebrity status\, Siccar Point has a reputation of being remote and inaccessible. In fact\, it can be easily viewed from the cliff top after a short\, level walk from the nearest road. SUMMARY:Open Evening: West of Scotland Mineral and Lapidary Society
DESCRIPTION:The West of Scotland Mineral and Lapidary Society was founded in 1966 by a group of people who had a common interest in collecting\, studying\, and polishing semi-precious stones. For the last 25 years the Society’s clubroom has been based in Knightswood Community Centre\, Knightswood\, Glasgow\, G13 3DD. \nThe primary aim of the Society is to foster an interest in natural minerals\, Lapidary (the cutting\, shaping\, and polishing of stones) and in the craftmanship required both for lapidary and its associated crafts on a non-commercial basis. The Society has now extended its skillset to include enamelling and some members silversmith to set their stones. \nTo celebrate this year’s Scottish Geology Festival\, the WSMLS are opening their workshop to interested visitors on the above dates and times when members are working. You can head along to discover the art of lapidary and find out how to cut\, shape\, and polish beautiful stones and gems. SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Hopeman-Clashach: Fossil dunes and footprints with the OUGS
DESCRIPTION:Starting at Hopeman beach huts we can see relicts of aeolian barchan and proposed star dunes before examining a stretch of coastline exhibiting small faults\, a range of soft sediment deformation features\, fluvial and lacustrine sandstones\, abandoned millstones and quarries\, trace fossils and other sedimentary features. \nThis trip is in collaboration with the Open University Geological Society (OUGS) and tickets must be booked in advance. To book your place and for a more detailed itinerary including meeting point head to eventbrite.  \nMeeting point: 10am – Hopeman beach huts. This trip is expected to last 2-3 hours. \nInsurance and Paperwork: SGT/OUGS has public liability insurance cover only for field trips and other events.  At the start of the excursion you will be asked to sign to confirm that you are aware of this\, that you have read the Society’s Safety Rules and risk assessment\, and that you attend entirely at your own risk.  We also ask that you complete the Contact Form and bring a paper copy with you\, which will be held by the chairman for the duration of the excursion. \nChecklist – what to bring \n– Packed lunch and other snacks to eat in the field.  Water. \n– Layered clothing appropriate for variable weather conditions; waterproof outerwear; hat & gloves\, plus sun hat if appropriate; stout boots; walking pole(s) if normally used; whistle; sunscreen. \n– Hand lens\, binoculars\, camera if desired. \n\n \n\n \nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2024\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust.
