SUMMARY:Online Talk: Can Scottish Caves Tell a Story? Scientific detective work unravelling the past.
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated talk will look at various scientific approaches and techniques applied to caves and the deposits they contain\, looking for clues as to their formation and past history of changing climates and environments. What do we look for? How do we identify significant changes and how can we date them?\n\nSpeaker: Dr Tim Lawson completed his PhD thesis at the University of Edinburgh in 1983 on the Quaternary geomorphology of Assynt\, one of the classic areas of Scottish Geology. Caves and what they contained formed a significant part of his research. He has written over 60 academic papers on aspects of the geomorphology of this and adjoining areas\, and edited several books. Having retired from a teaching career in 2019\, he has reinvigorated his research interests and is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen.\n\n\n\nFree online talk\, booking required. SUMMARY:Open Day: Scottish Mineral & Lapidary Club\, Stones: From Beginning to End!
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! The Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival on Tuesdays 2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd and 30th June between 10am – 4pm and also on Saturdays 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, and 27th. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.Visitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agates.  With over 5000 mineral specimens in the collection\, large examples are on display  –  an A to Z of many Scottish minerals/rocks   (the pommel stone of serpentine from Iona – part of the Sword of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle – was sourced and shaped by Club Members)  –  and specimens from throughout Europe as the latest theme. \nMembers range from 10 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.Access – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.Toilets – Male\, female and disabled.Parking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk) or free at Ocean Terminal (c 15 minute walk)Nearest trams – Constitution Street (2 minute walk)\,   buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2026\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. East Lothian ambient composer Michael Begg’s work includes Deep Time and accompanies atmospheric video from Glenda Rome which will also be shown as excerpts from the film ‘Expressing the Earth’. DESCRIPTION:The West of Scotland Mineral and Lapidary Society invites you to visit their workshop during the Scottish Geology Festival. \nCome and watch live demonstrations of stone working\, including cutting\, shaping\, grinding\, and polishing a variety of stones. Visitors can also explore a display of handcrafted work by society members and browse a selection of stones available for purchase – ranging from rough specimens to polished pieces and finished jewellery. \nThe Society’s primary aim is to foster interest in natural minerals and the art of lapidary (the craft of cutting and polishing stones) alongside the associated skills and craftsmanship\, all on a non-commercial basis. These outdoor education courses take you into the field and equip you with the knowledge and skills to read our landscape with new eyes. DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Geology Trust are thrilled to bring you our fourth Art in Earth Science exhibition. \nIn collaboration with the Leith Lapidary Club and ScotArt\, SGT are hosting another fantastic showcase of geologically themed art. Exhibitors include Carmen Carmelo\, William Adams\, Pindar Sidisunthorn\, Sarah Inness\, and many more. \nThe exhibition runs from Tuesday 1st to Sunday 6th September in Gallery 1\, Scot-Art\, 151 London Road\, Edinburgh EH7 6AE. \nWe hope you can come along and support these wonderful artists bringing Scottish Geology to new audiences.

SUMMARY:Geology Weekend at Arbroath Signal Tower Museum
DESCRIPTION:Head along to Arbroath Signal Tower Museum on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September from 10:30am – 4pm to learn all about the types of rocks you can find along the Angus Coast! \nExplore a selection of rocks\, pebbles fossils and agates from the local Angus Coast and learn about the world beneath your feet! \nThere will also be a selection of minerals that fluoresce under ultraviolet light for you to marvel at in the education centre. \nDon’t miss a talk by local geologists on ‘How Geology Shaped Us’ at 1:00pm. \nThis is a free drop-in event\, no booking required. Please note\, last admission to the museum is 30 minutes before closing. \nVenue: Signal Tower Museum Courtyard\, Ladyloan\, Arbroath DD11 1PU. \nSignal Tower Museum is located near Arbroath’s picturesque and busy harbour\, in a complex of buildings which were originally used as the shore station and accommodation for the Bell Rock Lighthouse. Built in 1813\, Signal Tower served the lighthouse until it was decommissioned in 1955 and became a museum in 1974. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Geology Weekend at Auchmithie
DESCRIPTION:Join the Scottish Geology Trust and Auchmithie Hall Committee for an exciting weekend celebrating Scotland’s amazing geology. \nSee local rocks\, minerals\, fossils and gemstones and participate in hands on activities in Auchmithie Village Hall on both Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September.  There will also be a display of minerals that fluoresce under UV light and activities for young children! \nThis is a drop in event from 11am – 4pm each day. There will also be a talk on “The Geology Scotland”\, given at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Village Hall. \nFor the more adventurous you can head down to the beach for a pebble event both days to meet with geologists and SGT volunteers. You’ll be able to talk to them about the type of stones found on the beach and the stories behind how they were formed. The beach event is a drop-in event between 11am – 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday\, there is no need to book\, but get in touch with festival@scottishgeologytrust.org if you have any questions. In the event of bad weather\, the beach portion of the event may be cancelled or postponed – please check with the organiser/ at the hall on the day. \nThe road to the hall is smooth and okay for wheelchairs\, but the actual beach is not wheelchair accessible. There is also access to the beach via 37 steps from the middle of the village. These are steep and can be slippery when wet\, sensible footwear is recommended. Children very welcome\, but must be supervised by an adult at all times. \nStay safe: take care on the beach\, watch your step and come prepared for the weather. \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\nBeach Event: \n \n  \n  \n  \nVillage Hall Events: \n \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Geology Weekend at St Cyrus
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of everything rocky\, pebbly and geological at St Cyrus NNR and beyond! \nThe Scottish Geology Trust\, Stories of Stone and NatureScot bring you a display of local rocks\, fossils\,  pebbles and agates to celebrate everything geological at St Cyrus NNR and beyond. \nLocal Geologists from Stories of Stone and SGT volunteers will be on hand on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September\, from 11am – 4pm. They will tell you all about the local rocks and guide you through the geological story of how the cliffs formed and how the beach pebbles came to be at St Cyrus. \nThere will also be fluorescent mineral display showing how ultra violet light can transform the most drab rocks into beautiful and colourful specimens. \nA talk on “The Geology of Scotland” will be given at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Old Lifeboat Shed. \nThere will be childrens activities too! Make a pebble friend\, a fossil or a badge! \nPlease meet at the visitor centre. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \nFree drop-in event\, booking not required.   \nThere are public toilets next to the visitor centre\, including two with baby changing tables and an accessible changing places toilet (RADAR key required for access). The visitor centre and car park are wheelchair accessible but the wider reserve unfortunately is not. \n\n\n \n\n
