We’ll follow the path up Abbey Craig\, which is a little steep and uneven in places. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\n\nFossil Walks – every Friday and Saturday (tide dependent). Book online via Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum’s website. \nEvent cost:  \n\nAdult (Aged 14+) – £13.00 plus online booking fees\nConcession (Student\, Over 60s) – £10.00 plus online booking fees\nChild (under 14 years old – must be accompanied by an adult) – £5.50 plus online booking fees\n\nT&Cs \n\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear.\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. Toilet facilities are available at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum.\nPlease note as Cromarty experiences slow erosion that fossils are not guaranteed on every tour.\nOnly service and guide dogs are permitted on our Fossil Walks.\nAll attendees under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian and cannot be left unattended during the walks.\n\nOur fossil walks will be operating in compliance with the Scottish Fossil Code. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out!  \nThe Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival  \nTuesdays 2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd and 30th September between 10am – 4pm\nSaturdays 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, and 27th September between 10am – 4pm\nTuesday 7th and Saturday 11th October between 10am – 4pm. \nThe Club will also have displays at Dynamic Earth from 10 am to 4 pm over the weekend of Saturday 13 / Sunday 14 / Monday 15  September to include volcanic material locally and worldwide. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.Visitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agates.  With over 5000 mineral specimens in the collection\, large examples are on display and an A to Z of many Scottish minerals/rocks.  (The pommel stone of serpentine from Iona – part of the Sword of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle – was sourced and shaped by Club Members) \nMembers range from 10 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.Access – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.Toilets – Male\, female and disabled.Parking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk) or free at Ocean Terminal (c 15 minute walk)Nearest trams – Constitution Street (2 minute walk); Buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2025\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. SUMMARY:Scottish Geology Festival at Auchmithie
DESCRIPTION:At Auchmithie you can see incredible examples of sandstone conglomerate cliffs formed by a giant Mississippi sized river that once flowed over vast parts of the land over 370 million years ago. As part of the Scottish Geology Festival 2025\, The Scottish Geology Trust\, supported by Auchmithie Village Hall\, are presenting a display of local rocks and fossils! \nThere will be accessible and informative displays of local stones in Auchmithie Village Hall on both Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September.  There will also be a display of minerals that fluoresce under UV light! This is a drop in event from 11am – 4pm each day. \nThere will also be a talk on “The Geology of the World in 40 mins”\, given at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Village Hall. \nFor the more adventurous you can head down to the beach for a pebble event both days to meet with geologists and SGT volunteers. You’ll be able to talk to them about the type of stones found on the beach and the stories behind how they were formed. The beach event is a drop-in event between 11am – 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday\, there is no need to book\, but get in touch with festival@scottishgeologytrust.org if you have any questions. DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to discover Edinburgh’s volcano during your walk in Holyrood Park! \nLearn about the 340 million year history of Arthur’s Seat\, from tropical lagoons to volcanic eruptions and glacial erosion. At this drop-in event\, SGT geologists will interpret the landscape and explain the geology which creates this unique feature in the heart of the city. \nVisit our stand adjacent to the Holyrood Palace carpark and learn about fossils originating from the time that the Arthur’s Seat volcano was erupting. Then pick up a map of the park\, and look out for our volunteers (wearing high-vis jackets and blue tee shirts) who will be stationed at various localities and will be able to explain the geological features found at each location. There will also be family activities in the Education Centre! \nAs this is a self-guided event\, open to anyone visiting the park\, visitors should consider route planning appropriate to their level of ability and the weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:At Auchmithie you can see incredible examples of sandstone conglomerate cliffs formed by a giant Mississippi sized river that once flowed over vast parts of the land over 370 million years ago. As part of the Scottish Geology Festival 2025\, The Scottish Geology Trust\, supported by Auchmithie Village Hall\, are presenting a display of local rocks and fossils! \nThere will be accessible and informative displays of local stones in Auchmithie Village Hall on both Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September.  There will also be a display of minerals that fluoresce under UV light! This is a drop in event from 11am – 4pm each day. \nThere will also be a talk on “The Geology of the World in 40 mins”\, given at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Village Hall. \nFor the more adventurous you can head down to the beach for a pebble event both days to meet with geologists and SGT volunteers. You’ll be able to talk to them about the type of stones found on the beach and the stories behind how they were formed. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out!  \nThe Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival  \nTuesdays 2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd and 30th September between 10am – 4pm\nSaturdays 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, and 27th September between 10am – 4pm\nTuesday 7th and Saturday 11th October between 10am – 4pm. \nThe Club will also have displays at Dynamic Earth from 10 am to 4 pm over the weekend of Saturday 13 / Sunday 14 / Monday 15  September to include volcanic material locally and worldwide. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.Visitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agates.  With over 5000 mineral specimens in the collection\, large examples are on display and an A to Z of many Scottish minerals/rocks.  (The pommel stone of serpentine from Iona – part of the Sword of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle – was sourced and shaped by Club Members) \nMembers range from 10 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.Access – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.Toilets – Male\, female and disabled.Parking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk) or free at Ocean Terminal (c 15 minute walk)Nearest trams – Constitution Street (2 minute walk); Buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2025\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\n\nFossil Walks – every Friday and Saturday (tide dependent). Book online via Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum’s website. \nEvent cost:  \n\nAdult (Aged 14+) – £13.00 plus online booking fees\nConcession (Student\, Over 60s) – £10.00 plus online booking fees\nChild (under 14 years old – must be accompanied by an adult) – £5.50 plus online booking fees\n\nT&Cs \n\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Whether you’re new to the field or new to the city\, it’s a great chance to meet like-minded geoscientists in an informal setting. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is aimed at Early Career geologists/geoscientists (less than 10 years industry experience) interested in connecting and networking with those in their field within the central belt of Scotland. Attendees must be a fellow of the Geological Society of London. \nThe evening shall be schedued as followed: \n\n5.30pm-6.15pm- Arrival at GDG Venterra Office in New Town for welcome drink in New Town. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out!  \nThe Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival  \nTuesdays 2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd and 30th September between 10am – 4pm\nSaturdays 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, and 27th September between 10am – 4pm\nTuesday 7th and Saturday 11th October between 10am – 4pm. \nThe Club will also have displays at Dynamic Earth from 10 am to 4 pm over the weekend of Saturday 13 / Sunday 14 / Monday 15  September to include volcanic material locally and worldwide. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.Visitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agates.  With over 5000 mineral specimens in the collection\, large examples are on display and an A to Z of many Scottish minerals/rocks.  (The pommel stone of serpentine from Iona – part of the Sword of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle – was sourced and shaped by Club Members) \nMembers range from 10 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.Access – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.Toilets – Male\, female and disabled.Parking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk) or free at Ocean Terminal (c 15 minute walk)Nearest trams – Constitution Street (2 minute walk); Buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2025\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. SUMMARY:Rocks and Ripples in Watercolour: A Coastal Art-Geology Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore the geological landscape at the Greyhope Bay Centre\, using watercolours in your sketchbook to capture the rocks and sea. \nJoin geologist and artist Phoebe Sleath on a guided evening walk around Greyhope Bay Centre\, where we will explore the rocky coastal landscape through confident and colourful watercolour sketches. \nAbout the Workshop \nTo start Phoebe will show you what’s in her field kit and demonstrate how you can work with watercolours in your sketchbooks to document geological features and learn more about the rocks and landscape in the process. We will talk through how to mix colours\, how to control the paint and water with a waterbrush\, and how to sketch out a scene. We will then use water-based pastels to add texture and movement to our paintings. On our walk we will interpret and learn about lots of different geological features; metamorphic rocks\, intrusive volcanic rocks\, folding and faulting and coastal erosion. \nThis workshop is suited to nature lovers of all abilities – whether you’re a geologist\, an artist\, or a complete beginner. There’s is something for everyone to find a deeper connection with the landscape. \nBy the end of the walk\, you should have plenty of interesting sketches and newfound knowledge to sketch and learn more wherever you go! \nAll materials will be provided\, and the ticket price includes a sketchbook to work in and to take away with you! Please dress appropriately for the weather with suitable clothing\, a rucksack and footwear. A spare jacket or mat to sit on will also be useful. The walk will be short and flexible\, but it is recommended to have comfortable mobility. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\n\nFossil Walks – every Friday and Saturday (tide dependent). Book online via Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum’s website. \nEvent cost:  \n\nAdult (Aged 14+) – £13.00 plus online booking fees\nConcession (Student\, Over 60s) – £10.00 plus online booking fees\nChild (under 14 years old – must be accompanied by an adult) – £5.50 plus online booking fees\n\nT&Cs \n\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. SUMMARY:Outdoor walk: Across the Highland Boundary – Scotland’s great fault line
DESCRIPTION:The Highland Boundary Fault is one Scotland’s great tectonic structures\, separating different landscapes and very different geology. Join geologists from the University of Aberdeen on a walk along the coast at Stonehaven – getting hands-on the rocks and exploring the significance of this major fault line. You’ll see deposits of long-lost rivers\, rocks brought part from the depths of the crust and signs of a vanished ocean – all access from the coastal path in magnificent scenery. \nOver 14 only \nThis is a walk from Cowie\, northern Stonehaven along the coast and back. A total of around 5 km\, lasting up to 4 hours maximum.
