SUMMARY:Geowalks Geology Holidays: Isle of Eigg
DESCRIPTION:The small Hebridean island of Eigg is an enchanting mix: beautiful scenery\, a surprising variety of rocks\, and a friendly and innovative local community. There are many geological riches to explore\, including important fossil-rich sedimentary rocks and the singing sands\, fringed by sandstone cliffs that are cut by basalt dykes. The famous Sgùrr forms the high point of the island. \nEigg is mostly formed from basalt lava flows and intrusions\, the remains of extensive volcanic activity 60 million years ago. These are underlain by sedimentary rocks from the Jurassic Period. The rocks of An Sgùrr were formed by a final\, violent volcanic eruption\, the last known volcanic activity in this area. This trip will explore Eigg’s geological variety\, in day walks around the island including the west coast\, the south of the island and An Sgùrr. \nJoin geologist Angus Miller for this Geowalks Geology Holiday\, exploring Eigg in a series of day walks\, at a relaxed pace with lots of flexibility. \nFurther information and booking

SUMMARY:North West Highlands Geopark: The North Coast Geotour
DESCRIPTION:The North Coast Geotour will consist of 8 field days and has two more field days than the other geotours and is based in Durness. Transport via minibus will be available from Ullapool to Durness\, all field localities and the return trip back to Ullapool. If Geotour participants wish to use their own transport that is also an option. The Geotour will again be led by Pete Harrison\, the NW Highlands Geopark Geologist. \nOn arrival in Durness\, there will then be 6 days fieldwork in the local area. Two days around Durness\, two around Loch Eriboll\, one further east to Tongue and a day to Cape Wrath via a ferry and minibus. \nIn Durness\, there is hotel\, self-catering\, guesthouse & B & B and hostel type accommodation available as well as a campsite. Early booking is advisable as it lies on the NC 500. (More advice can be provided on request). If you wish to stay in a different area of the North Coast your own transport would be useful. \nA packed lunch each day is advisable. There is a small supermarket. There are a few places to eat out or purchase carryout food in the evening.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Earth Day by experiencing Earth’s extraordinary 4.6 billion year journey through a 4.6 kilometre guided walk where each metre represents one million years. \nExplore a story of our living Earth – from its fiery beginnings through the emergence of life\, complex cells\, plants\, dinosaurs\, and humanity’s recent appearance in the last few centimetres of our journey. \nNo specialist knowledge required – just bring curiosity\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and walking shoes. All ages welcome. \nStarting at the formation of the solar system and the creation of Earth\, Deep Time Walk covers significant events in Earth’s deep history\, including the formation of the Moon\, plate tectonics\, the early evolution of life\, dinosaurs and much more. The walk will put into context humanity’s rich ancestral heritage and give you an insight into the interconnectedness of all life in the context of the present ‘code-red’ climate and ecological emergency. \nA radical perspective\, provoking action not apathy … [it] is the catalysing context of intergenerational justice; it is what frames the inspiring activism of Greta Thunberg and the school climate-strikers\, and the Sunrise campaigners pushing for a Green New Deal in America. A deep-time perspective requires us to consider not only how we will imagine the future\, but how the future will imagine us. SUMMARY:Lifelong learning course: Geology of Fife
DESCRIPTION:The Fife coastline has a rich array of rock types that influenced the locations of harbours and the use of local resources. This short course gives an overview of the history of the formation of the rocks of Fife and takes students on walking excursions to key geological sites. \nThe course offers an overview of the geology of Fife\, surveys how the modern landscape of Fife formed\, and allows students to appreciate how the long\, slow story of change that has created this area continues with modern processes. \nThe gently undulating landscapes of Fife mask a turbulent geological past. Rocks\, fossils and landforms of the area tell of baking deserts\, tropical rainforests and erupting volcanoes. DESCRIPTION:Join James Ryan\, the Trust’s Visitor Services Assistant at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace\, for a special presentation and talk on Scottish geologist\, writer and folklorist Hugh Miller (1802–56). \nHugh Miller (1802-1856) has been acclaimed as “the supreme poet of geology” and called “the David Attenborough of his day.” He gained such accolades not only as a pioneer of the science in its first heyday\, but because he wrote about everything he saw and discovered in such delightful terms. Hugh could lyrically evoke our planet’s passage through deep time\, while also describing fossils with homely metaphors and comparisons with the familiar everyday.\n\nTickets available here.  \nThis event is part of the Highland Cinema and National Trust For Scotland ‘Special Talk Series 2024-2025’\, with 50% of takings going to NTS\, to help it continue to preserve and protect Scotland’s precious heritage.

SUMMARY:Centennial Celebration of the Life & Works of Sir Archibald Geikie (1835-1924)
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at Haslemere Museum in celebration of the renowned Victorian geologist Sir Archibald Geikie. This two-day event aims to celebrate his life and work in the United Kingdom and internationally as well as highlighting his local connections in Haslemere and the celebrated Geikie Archive now in the care of the Museum. \nWe will be holding a series of lectures in-house and live streamed\, including from eminent speakers from the world of geoscience and members of the Geikie family. The wider programme also includes arts and crafts sessions and children’s activities relating to the Geikie collections. An evening fundraising Ceilidh music and dance event will be held\, offering fun for all ages! \nThere will also be a major exhibition displaying some objects from the Museum’s globally significant Geikie Archive collection. \nThe talks will be live streamed to a special gathering in Ullapool organised by the North West Highlands Geopark\, offering group viewing of the talks taking place in Haslemere and an opportunity for discussion\, along with the chance to see free Geike exhibition at Ullapool Museum exhibition.

What shared stories can we listen to through the sounds of stones?\n\n\nWith the instrumentation of Swedish and Scottish sandstone\, and live-painting with sand and water\, Swedish composer and sound artist Alexandra Nilsson together with Scottish visual artist Jenny Soep\, will explore this question in their new audiovisual work – Stone Drawings.\n\n\nAlexandra Nilsson has been exploring the sonic qualities of different types of stones for some years with her project FOSSIL. DESCRIPTION:Join the Hugh Miller Birthplace Museum for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. DESCRIPTION:A informal field trip followed by an afternoon meeting\, focused on Local Geodiversity Sites and the recently updated guidance on Establishing and Managing Local Nature Conservation Site Systems. This gathering\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust’s Geosites project and Lothian and Borders GeoConservation\, will be an opportunity to gather and discuss local geosites\, with a particular focus on how we can support and expand on existing local site networks. It will be of interest and useful to anyone interested in geology based anywhere in Scotland and particularly for people who are in Local Authority areas that haven’t got many\, or any\, existing Local Geodiversity Sites. \nVenue: Slateford\, west Edinburgh. \nProgramme: \nInformal Field Trip @ the Water of Leith \n10:00 Meet at the cafe of the Water of Leith Visitor Centre (24 Lanark Road\, Edinburgh\, EH14 1TQ) for coffee\, followed by a short field trip to visit two Local Geodiversity Sites: Water of Leith: Craiglockhart and Colinton Dells and Craiglockhart Hill. Bring warm\, waterproof clothing and footwear with a good tread. SUMMARY:James Hutton Exhibition and Event: The Fundamentals of Geology
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition celebrates the work of James Hutton who farmed at Slighhouses\, Scottish Borders\, during the eighteenth century.  By knowing the soils\, landscapes and the cliffs of Berwickshire\, James Hutton realised that geological time was far longer than the timeline previously suggested.  At Siccar Point on the Berwickshire coast he found evidence in the rocks that laid the foundations for his insight into deep time. \nHead along to The Hippodrome on Saturday 5th October from 11.00 – 4.00 for the opportunity to look at examples of rocks\, fossils and minerals which form the building blocks of geological features\, as well as pebbles and sand samples from local beaches. \nDo bring items from your geology collection if you are unsure of their identification and we will try to help you! \nVenue: The Hippodrome\, Harbour Road\, Eyemouth.
