SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Gaps in time at Whiting Ness (Arbroath)
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 30 million years of geological time is missing from the rocks exposed at Whiting Ness! \nJoin geologists from the British Geological Survey on Saturday the 14th September at 3pm for a walk to investigate and understand this intriguing geological site. \nThe sea-cliffs at Whiting Ness expose an impressive angular unconformity – a break in geological time that here represents a halt in the laying down of ancient river-rocks. During the walk we will investigate what happened to create this unconformity as we trace the topography of the landscape preserved in the cliffs\, consider the origin of the river sediments and look for ancient soils preserved in the rock. \nBritish Geological Survey geologists are currently re-surveying the geological maps of the Strathmore area\, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the process of geological surveying and its applications. \nFree\, booking essential. SUMMARY:Earth Made: A geology inspired creative collective
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative exhibition which celebrates the work of three geologically inspired creatives working within Scotland. A free event and pop-up shop featuring work from textile designer April Hay @agateandayre\, jeweller Stefanie Cheong @stefaniecheong and artist Vojta Hybl @rocksonpaper who all draw inspiration from geology around Scotland and are delighted to be exhibiting together for the first time. The opening times will be from 10am-5pm\, for three days only\, the 13th to the 15th of September. \n– April is the designer behind ‘Agate & Ayre’ and is passionate about sharing the beautiful Scottish landscape through digitally printed textile design. Texture\, colour and tactility are key themes throughout her work – taking a stone on its journey from being a cold\, hard object to a touchable\, fluid textile. She handmakes accessories for fashion and home from super soft bamboo neckwarmers to plush velvet cushion covers. He loves finding creative ways to re-imagine scientific concepts to reveal the stories hidden in rocks and the landscapes that they form. She brings a contemporary aesthetic to traditional lapidary process by cutting found and discarded rock and creating jewellery and objects. Often these are paired with recycled and fair trade metals. She started using Scottish found rock but recently she has also introduced making her own rocks from waste streams such as e-waste\, plastics\, glass and ceramics. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! SUMMARY:Guided Field Trip: The Geology of Schiehallion
DESCRIPTION:Join the Highland Perthshire Community Land Trust for a field trip to explore the geology around Schiehallion! \nThis trip will take in the glacial history around DC before heading to see the restored Lime Kiln at Tomphubil where there is an informative notice and a small limestone quarry where the limestone was extracted to feed the kiln. \nNext there will be an opportunity to explore the Barytes Spoil heap further down the hill where you’ll learn about the use of barytes for drilling mud for the North Sea wells and also the medical uses for barium meals and enemas. \nFrom there you’ll make your way down the Schiehallion road to visit Braes of Foss and the Maskelyne notice\, and hear about the experiment to ‘weigh the earth’ and of the first land based use of contours. \nNext you’ll get a chance to see the potholes\, dolines and swallow hole just west of Braes of Foss\, before moving on to the Schiehallion limestone pavement with its tremendous Clint’s and grykes and lime loving plants. \nThe final locality will be the Schiehallion Boulder bed erratic to be found at Lassintullich. \n10.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. on Saturday 14th September. Please dress for the weather. Warm clothing\, walking boots and waterproofs are advised. Please bring a packed lunch. \nMeeting point: 10am at the Dùn Coillich car park. Due to parking restrictions at other localities\, participants should first gather at the DC main car park and then arrange to car share with participants for other locations. \nThe DC car park is located on the B846 between Aberfeldy and Tummel Bridge in Perthshire. DESCRIPTION:A collaborative exhibition which celebrates the work of three geologically inspired creatives working within Scotland. A free event and pop-up shop featuring work from textile designer April Hay @agateandayre\, jeweller Stefanie Cheong @stefaniecheong and artist Vojta Hybl @rocksonpaper who all draw inspiration from geology around Scotland and are delighted to be exhibiting together for the first time. \nThe opening times will be from 10am-5pm\, for three days only\, the 13th to the 15th of September. \n– April is the designer behind ‘Agate & Ayre’ and is passionate about sharing the beautiful Scottish landscape through digitally printed textile design. Texture\, colour and tactility are key themes throughout her work – taking a stone on its journey from being a cold\, hard object to a touchable\, fluid textile. She handmakes accessories for fashion and home from super soft bamboo neckwarmers to plush velvet cushion covers. She brings a contemporary aesthetic to traditional lapidary process by cutting found and discarded rock and creating jewellery and objects. Often these are paired with recycled and fair trade metals. In just 16 months\, the project’s volunteers have created a new Geosites map interface and uploaded photos and information about over 350 sites. DESCRIPTION:The West of Scotland Mineral and Lapidary Society was founded in 1966 by a group of people who had a common interest in collecting\, studying\, and polishing semi-precious stones. For the last 25 years the Society’s clubroom has been based in Knightswood Community Centre\, Knightswood\, Glasgow\, G13 3DD. \nThe primary aim of the Society is to foster an interest in natural minerals\, Lapidary (the cutting\, shaping\, and polishing of stones) and in the craftmanship required both for lapidary and its associated crafts on a non-commercial basis. The Society has now extended its skillset to include enamelling and some members silversmith to set their stones. \nTo celebrate this year’s Scottish Geology Festival\, the WSMLS are opening their workshop to interested visitors on the above dates and times when members are working. Daily will describe key frontiers in understanding human dependence nature – for material basics of nutrition\, health\, climate security\, and economic security to ethereal senses of belonging\, beauty\, and spirit. Making this understanding accessible and actionable is crucial\, to inform the profound societal transformations necessary to secure the biosphere and the human future. \nThrough vivid examples\, Gretchen will bring to life the rapidly growing movement to bring the values of earth’s lands\, waters\, and biodiversity into the mainstream of decision-making. She will describe pioneering models of success for valuing nature in policy\, planning\, finance\, and practice. These innovations – often born in small countries – use new forms of science\, technology\, and partnership. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! SUMMARY:Wemyss Caves Pictish Carvings - Full Guided Tour and Museum
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1\,500 years ago. \nLocated on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth\, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols\, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle\, once home to the Earls of Fife. \nThe Tour: The tour covers 5\,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave\, Doo Cave\, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave. \nThis is a coastal landscape with some uneven ground and includes many steps. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing. A full tour to the caves and back is one mile long and usually lasts around an hour and a half. \nHowever\, if you want to avoid steps and would prefer a shorter route\, please get in touch to find out about one of our accessible tours which are particularly suitable for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. \nWe can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking. Book here. \nThe Museum: You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum\, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour\, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm. \nAs well as telling the story of the caves\, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history\, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles. \nToilet facilities and refreshments are available in the Museum. \nParking: Please note that there is no on-site parking in The Haugh\, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes\, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. We can however arrange disabled parking at the Visitor Centre on request. \nDonations: All tours are given free of charge\, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. DESCRIPTION:Join Angus Miller from Geowalks for a guided walk to Siccar Point. It is Scotland’s most important geological site\, but Siccar Point is tucked away on the rugged coastline of the Scottish Borders\, a hidden gem with beautiful coastal scenery and a rich geological story. \nWe’ll get to the point by following James Hutton’s journey along the coast from Cockburnspath\, gradually travelling back in time through three periods of contrasting sedimentary rocks. This is a varied walk along the coastal path from Cockburnspath to Pease Bay and on to the viewpoint above Siccar Point. The rocks lie at the foot of a steep grassy slope; it is not essential to descend all the way down the slope to see the key features. Distance 6km one-way. \nCost: £20\, free for young people.
