SUMMARY:Exhibition at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh: Earth Matters
DESCRIPTION:Earth Matters marks the tercentenary of the birth of the Edinburgh-born geologist\, writer and farmer\, James Hutton (1726-1797). Often described as the ‘father of modern geology’\, Hutton is known for his ground-breaking theories into the Earth’s creation and his exploration of rock formation. Hutton also gave much attention to the earth beneath our feet – soil. \nEarth Matters is inspired by Hutton and subsequent trailblazers who have helped challenge and change our understanding of soil. Earth Matters will explore Hutton’s writings on soil and include the rarely exhibited ‘Lost Drawings’ by his contemporary\, the artist and writer John Clerk of Eldin. DESCRIPTION:Through detailed study of geological specimens and observations gathered in the field\, Hutton learned to “read” the rocks – revealing evidence of immense spans of time\, erosion\, and renewal. \nThis new exhibition at National Museums Scotland explores how the careful study of both dramatic landscapes and small rock samples led Hutton to develop his groundbreaking Theory of the Earth\, laying the foundations for our modern understanding of geology and deep time.\n \nFind it on Level 3 of the Grand Gallery from 1st June through the end of the year.
