DESCRIPTION:Earth Matters marks the tercentenary of the birth of the Edinburgh-born geologist\, writer and farmer\, James Hutton (1726-1797). Often described as the ‘father of modern geology’\, Hutton is known for his ground-breaking theories into the Earth’s creation and his exploration of rock formation. Hutton also gave much attention to the earth beneath our feet – soil. \nEarth Matters is inspired by Hutton and subsequent trailblazers who have helped challenge and change our understanding of soil. Earth Matters will explore Hutton’s writings on soil and include the rarely exhibited ‘Lost Drawings’ by his contemporary\, the artist and writer John Clerk of Eldin. SUMMARY:Exhibition: James Hutton and Glen Tilt
DESCRIPTION:The sculptor Jake Harvey and artist Helen Douglas were commissioned by Blair Charitable Trust to create sculptures and printed works using Glen Tilt\, which runs for several miles Northerly from Blair Atholl\, and the discoveries of the geologist James Hutton in that glen as their inspiration. Their works alongside various artefacts relating to James Hutton’s visit to the glen in 1785 are on display in the Banvie Hall within Blair Castle. The exhibition runs until 30th October. \nThe exhibition is part of a nation wide celebration of the tercentenary of James Hutton (1726-1797)\, the polymath and founder of modern geology. It is in the glen running into Blair Castle that Hutton made one of his great discoveries unlocking the theory of deep time. This is the inspiration behind the artists’ work and we hope their beautiful work brings Hutton’s discovery to life. \nExhibition location: Inside the Banvie Hall at Blair Castle\, located towards the northern end of the castle\, through the glass entrance doors. \nExhibition admission: Included with a Castle or a Gardens & Grounds ticket. \nIf you have a Gardens & Grounds ticket\, please enter via the Banvie Hall entrance. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of drawings\, prints and film which explore Scottish Geology along the Highland Boundary and Great Glen fault lines. \nThe Ground Shakes presents new works by Dundee-based artist Calum Wallis\, created over the past two years with funding from Creative Scotland and The Geologists’ Association. \nTracing a geological journey across Scotland\, Wallis follows the Highland Boundary and Great Glen fault lines as markers through a landscape in perpetual flux. Through large-scale drawings\, etchings\, stone lithographs and film\, the exhibition reflects on the dynamic forces that shape the land and our fleeting relationship to deep geological time. \nDeveloped through extensive fieldwork and location-based research from Conic Hill to Loch Eriboll\, Imachar to Wilkhaven\, these works invite us to consider how the shifting ground beneath our feet connects human experience to the slow\, transformative movements of the Earth itself. \nCalum Wallis bio\nCalum grew up in the North Highlands\, where a childhood spent among the hills and trees of Ross Shire and the rocky wonderland north of Ullapool informed a deeply held love of wild places. On moving to Dundee in 2013 to study fine art\, he discovered a passion for drawing as an immediate means of mindfully recording and participating in the landscape around him. \nOver the past 12 years this has since grown into an artistic practice of slow observation\, with repeated visits and close drawing of geological features forming a picture of erosion over the course of a human lifetime. \nCalum has exhibited widely across Scotland and has completed multiple residencies; the most recent being a North Sea voyage delivering the touring exhibition Ebbe and Flow to Norway on the 100 year old herring boat The Swan. \nFree event\, no booking required \n\n \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2026\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. SUMMARY:Open Day: Scottish Mineral & Lapidary Club\, Stones: From Beginning to End!
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! The Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival on Tuesdays 2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd and 30th June between 10am – 4pm and also on Saturdays 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, and 27th. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.Visitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agates.  With over 5000 mineral specimens in the collection\, large examples are on display  –  an A to Z of many Scottish minerals/rocks   (the pommel stone of serpentine from Iona – part of the Sword of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle – was sourced and shaped by Club Members)  –  and specimens from throughout Europe as the latest theme. \nMembers range from 10 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.Access – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.Toilets – Male\, female and disabled.Parking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk) or free at Ocean Terminal (c 15 minute walk)Nearest trams – Constitution Street (2 minute walk)\,   buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2026\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Colin Campbell\, Chief Executive\, The James Hutton Institute while he traces James Hutton’s life and intellectual development. \n\n\n\nJames Hutton\, physician\, chemist\, farmer and natural philosopher\, is best known as the founder of modern geology that is the basis of the “Deep Time” of our Earth. Yet his contribution reaches far beyond the rocks of Siccar Point. In his Theory of the Earth\, Theory of Rain\, Elements of Agriculture and the Principles of Knowledge and Reason\, Hutton articulated a profoundly modern vision of science: that nature operates through continuous\, observable processes; that knowledge progresses gradually through evidence and reason; that truth is constantly hampered by error and uncertainty and that human understanding is refined through disciplined inquiry. \nThis online lecture traces Hutton’s life and intellectual development within the Scottish Enlightenment\, examining how his ideas of systems and cyclical processes operated in diverse areas of human physiology\, agricultural experimentation and field observation of rocks and geological strata to a coherent philosophy of nature. SUMMARY:Exhibition at Paxton House: James Hutton 300 – Landscape\, Rocks and Time
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition will explore James Hutton’s influence on the processes leading to the formation of rocks and on the concept of geological time in a series of interpretation panels\, which tell of Hutton’s life in Edinburgh during the period of the Scottish Enlightenment as well as the development of his Theory of the Earth. His writings explored the processes which produce the rocks and landscapes we see around us\, as well as the idea that geological time was very different from current ideas in the eighteenth century. \nSeveral of James Hutton’s contemporaries were able to travel with him around Scotland\, seeking places where he could find evidence to support his theories. The exhibition includes displays of the rocks that he found at the well-known unconformities in the Isle of Arran\, Jedburgh and Siccar Point\, as well as granite exposures in the Grampians and north-east Scotland. Illustrations of Hutton’s sites\, the so-called ‘Lost Drawings’\, show how he and his contemporaries developed the basic principles of geology.\nIn his early days he took on two family farms situated in the Lammermuir Hills\, aiming to cultivate the inhospitable moors. SUMMARY:Ringing the bells for James Hutton
DESCRIPTION:In order to help celebrate Hutton’s Tercentenary\, a group of church bell ringers from various parts of England and Scotland will meet on Wednesday 3rd June to ring the eight bells at Haddington church\, East Lothian. The ringing will start at about 10.30am and continue without a break for three hours. SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Burnmouth
DESCRIPTION:Join the Geological Society of Glasgow for a field trip to Burnmouth \nThe rocks exposed along the foreshore at Burnmouth in the Scottish Borders are early Carboniferous in age and belong to the Ballagan Formation. They were deposited in a low-lying vegetated coastal wetland around 350 million years ago\, when Scotland as we know it was a very different place! During this time we were situated at low latitudes close to the equator and experienced a hot and humid climate. The area was subject to vast droughts and flooding\, sea levels fluctuated and sandy river channels meandered across the land. It was in this setting that we also saw the first tetrapods (four-limbed animals with backbones) making their way on to the land. Originally these rocks were laid down on a relatively flat surface and they stayed this way until a period of significant tectonic activity and continental collision known as the Varsican orogeny\, which happened around 200 million years ago. These intense tectonic forces caused the rocks at Burnmouth to be uplifted\, tilted and faulted\, eventually resulting in the striking near vertical orientation we will see on the shore today! \nMinibus leaving Molema building\, Lilibank Gardens\, Glasgow 8.30am – returning around 6.30pm \nActivity level: Moderate – “People with a moderate level of fitness.” This trip is on slippery rocks with a fair amount of scrambling involved \n£30.00 per person for members (£35.00 non-members). The Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival on Tuesdays 2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd and 30th June between 10am – 4pm and also on Saturdays 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, and 27th. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.Visitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agates.  With over 5000 mineral specimens in the collection\, large examples are on display  –  an A to Z of many Scottish minerals/rocks   (the pommel stone of serpentine from Iona – part of the Sword of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle – was sourced and shaped by Club Members)  –  and specimens from throughout Europe as the latest theme. \nMembers range from 10 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.Access – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.Toilets – Male\, female and disabled.Parking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk) or free at Ocean Terminal (c 15 minute walk)Nearest trams – Constitution Street (2 minute walk)\,   buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2026\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. SUMMARY:Sketch Like a Geologist: Stirling Castle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a creative and educational experience where art meets geology. \nThis hands-on session will explore the geological history of Stirling through pencil and paper. Discover how scientific sketching helps geologists understand the landscape and learn to observe the world with a keen eye and curiosity. \nGeologists are artists out in the field\, sketching observations to record and analyse the natural world. In this workshop\, combining geology and art\, participants will:\nLearn how geologists use drawing as a scientific tool \n– Discover the geology of Stirling – from volcanic activity to glacial sculpting\n– Explore and take part in basic geological field sketching techniques\n– No matter your level of drawing skill or geological knowledge\, we’ll guide you through sketching techniques and note-taking practices – perfect for beginners and enthusiasts alike. \nThis in-person workshop is led by Josephine\, who holds a BSc in Geological Sciences. You will be provided with a notebook and pencil so you can note down your geological observations! \nWho is it for:\nAdult (+14 years) with an interest in geology and/or art\nAnyone curious about the connection between art and geology\nNo previous experience in geology or art is required\, just an interest in observing the world around you \nAccessibility:\nThis event includes a walk around the Stirling Castle area. Participants should be comfortable walking and being on their feet for up to 1.5 hours at a gentle pace\, including some uneven paths\, slight inclines and steps. A moderate level of fitness is recommended. SUMMARY:Arthur’s Seat Volcano Trail
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to discover Edinburgh’s volcano during your walk in Holyrood Park\, and to celebrate the 300th Birthday of James Hutton\, the father of modern geology\, in the place where many of his crucial observations were made! \nTake a geological walk through the 340 million year history of Arthur’s Seat\, from tropical lagoons to volcanic eruptions\, and from glacial erosion to the Scottish Enlightenment. At this drop-in event\, SGT geologists and Holyrood Park Rangers will interpret the landscape and explain the geology which creates this unique feature in the heart of the city. Visit our stand adjacent to the Holyrood Palace carpark and learn about fossils originating from the time that the Arthur’s Seat volcano was erupting. Then pick up a map of the park\, and look out for our volunteers (wearing high-vis jackets and blue tee shirts) who will be stationed at various localities and will be able to explain the geological features found at each location. Meanwhile\, Holyrood Park Rangers will lead a range of fun geology experiments and activities in the Holyrood Park Education Centre. \nAs this is a self-guided event\, open to anyone visiting the park\, visitors should consider route planning appropriate to their level of ability and the weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:Explore the coastal rocks of Glasgow and get hands-on with this mindful rock felting activity\, where we’ll create cozy woollen stones. \nWe’ll meet at Rouken Glen Park\, where we’ll explore some of the local rocks that we find. \nWhile the event is part of the Scottish Geology Festival\, you don’t need to a rock expert\, it’s more about getting outdoors\, learning a new skill\, and appreciating the beauty of the world around us. \nParticipants will be invited to take a deeper look at a specific stone and really get to know them. In keeping with the theme of this year’s Scottish Geology Festival – 300 Years of Deep Time – we’ll think about what we can learn from these rocks. We’ll then learn the technique of wet felting\, and set to work creating beautiful felted stones from our finds.
