SUMMARY:North West Highlands Geopark: The North Coast Geotour
DESCRIPTION:The North Coast Geotour will consist of 8 field days and has two more field days than the other geotours and is based in Durness. Transport via minibus will be available from Ullapool to Durness\, all field localities and the return trip back to Ullapool. If Geotour participants wish to use their own transport that is also an option. The Geotour will again be led by Pete Harrison\, the NW Highlands Geopark Geologist. \nOn arrival in Durness\, there will then be 6 days fieldwork in the local area. Two days around Durness\, two around Loch Eriboll\, one further east to Tongue and a day to Cape Wrath via a ferry and minibus. \nIn Durness\, there is hotel\, self-catering\, guesthouse & B & B and hostel type accommodation available as well as a campsite. Early booking is advisable as it lies on the NC 500. (More advice can be provided on request). If you wish to stay in a different area of the North Coast your own transport would be useful. \nA packed lunch each day is advisable. There is a small supermarket. There are a few places to eat out or purchase carryout food in the evening.

SUMMARY:Geowalks Geology Holidays: Isle of Eigg
DESCRIPTION:The small Hebridean island of Eigg is an enchanting mix: beautiful scenery\, a surprising variety of rocks\, and a friendly and innovative local community. There are many geological riches to explore\, including important fossil-rich sedimentary rocks and the singing sands\, fringed by sandstone cliffs that are cut by basalt dykes. The famous Sgùrr forms the high point of the island. \nEigg is mostly formed from basalt lava flows and intrusions\, the remains of extensive volcanic activity 60 million years ago. These are underlain by sedimentary rocks from the Jurassic Period. The rocks of An Sgùrr were formed by a final\, violent volcanic eruption\, the last known volcanic activity in this area. This trip will explore Eigg’s geological variety\, in day walks around the island including the west coast\, the south of the island and An Sgùrr. \nJoin geologist Angus Miller for this Geowalks Geology Holiday\, exploring Eigg in a series of day walks\, at a relaxed pace with lots of flexibility. \nFurther information and booking

Book here. \nThis event is part of Glasgow Science Festival 2025. \n  \n\n\n\n\nAdditional Information \nThe route will start at the University of Glasgow Gilbert Scott Building and will mostly follow pavements and established paths around the main campus\, but there are some moderate inclines and uneven/cobbled paths. \nWe will look at points of interest around the Gilbert Scott Building and Professor’s Square\, then onto University Avenue and St Mungo’s Square\, finishing up on Dumbarton Road outside the Adam Smith Business School. \nThere are some sections with steps but alternative lift access is available (via lift in the Gilbert Scott Building and lift in the Adam Smith Business School).

DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\n\nFossil Walks – every Friday and Saturday (tide dependent). Book online via Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum’s website. \nEvent cost:  \n\nAdult (Aged 14+) – £13.00 plus online booking fees\nConcession (Student\, Over 60s) – £10.00 plus online booking fees\nChild (under 14 years old – must be accompanied by an adult) – £5.50 plus online booking fees\n\nT&Cs \n\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear.\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. DESCRIPTION:A celebration of everything rocky\, pebbly and geological at St Cyrus NNR and beyond! \nThe Scottish Geology Trust\, Stories of Stone and NatureScot bring you a display of local rocks\, pebbles and agates to celebrate everything geological at St Cyrus NNR and beyond\, as part of Geology Festival 2025. \nLocal Geologists from Stories of Stone and SGT volunteers will be on hand on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September\, from 11am – 4pm. They will tell you all about the local rocks and guide you through the geological story of how the cliffs formed and how the beach pebbles came to be at St Cyrus. \nThere will also be fluorescent mineral display showing how ultra violet light can transform the most drab rocks into beautiful and colourful specimens. \nA talk on “The Geology of the World in 30 mins” will be given at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Old Lifeboat Shed. \nThere will be childrens activities too! Make a pebble friend\, a fossil or a badge! \nPlease meet at the visitor centre. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \nFree drop-in event\, booking not required.   \nThere are public toilets next to the visitor centre\, including two with baby changing tables and an accessible changing places toilet (RADAR key required for access). DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\n\nFossil Walks – every Friday and Saturday (tide dependent). Book online via Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum’s website. \nEvent cost:  \n\nAdult (Aged 14+) – £13.00 plus online booking fees\nConcession (Student\, Over 60s) – £10.00 plus online booking fees\nChild (under 14 years old – must be accompanied by an adult) – £5.50 plus online booking fees\n\nT&Cs \n\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear.\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. Toilet facilities are available at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum.\nPlease note as Cromarty experiences slow erosion that fossils are not guaranteed on every tour.\nOnly service and guide dogs are permitted on our Fossil Walks.\nAll attendees under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian and cannot be left unattended during the walks.\n\nOur fossil walks will be operating in compliance with the Scottish Fossil Code. Therefore fossils collected from the beach will remain at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum on display for the duration of one month before being returned to the beach. \nWe strongly recommend reading over the Scottish Fossil Code before taking part in our walk. \nCost: £13 per person. DESCRIPTION:Join the GeoBus team to explore local rock and fossil highlights on the St Andrews coast. \nThe first few stops on our walk will be within the town\, followed by a wander along the Fife Coastal Path to visit our local volcano at the Rock and Spindle\, a Geological SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest)\, noting features on our way. \nMeet at West Sands car park (by the Golf Museum\, postcode: KY16 9AB) at 10am. \nThis guided walk will follow sections of the Fife Coastal Path but will also include walking over rocks and along beaches.  Your ability to complete the walk is at your own discretion. \nThis event is free\, but booking is essential as places are limited. SUMMARY:Open Day: Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out!  \nThe Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival  \nTuesdays 2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd and 30th September between 10am – 4pm\nSaturdays 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, and 27th September between 10am – 4pm\nTuesday 7th and Saturday 11th October between 10am – 4pm. \nThe Club will also have displays at Dynamic Earth from 10 am to 4 pm over the weekend of Saturday 13 / Sunday 14 / Monday 15  September to include volcanic material locally and worldwide. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.Visitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agates.  With over 5000 mineral specimens in the collection\, large examples are on display and an A to Z of many Scottish minerals/rocks.  (The pommel stone of serpentine from Iona – part of the Sword of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle – was sourced and shaped by Club Members) \nMembers range from 10 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.Access – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.Toilets – Male\, female and disabled.Parking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk) or free at Ocean Terminal (c 15 minute walk)Nearest trams – Constitution Street (2 minute walk); Buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2025\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust.
