These outdoor education courses take you into the field and equip you with the knowledge and skills to read our landscape with new eyes. DESCRIPTION:The West of Scotland Mineral and Lapidary Society invites you to visit their workshop during the Scottish Geology Festival. \nCome and watch live demonstrations of stone working\, including cutting\, shaping\, grinding\, and polishing a variety of stones. Visitors can also explore a display of handcrafted work by society members and browse a selection of stones available for purchase – ranging from rough specimens to polished pieces and finished jewellery. \nThe Society’s primary aim is to foster interest in natural minerals and the art of lapidary (the craft of cutting and polishing stones) alongside the associated skills and craftsmanship\, all on a non-commercial basis. SUMMARY:Open Day: Scottish Mineral & Lapidary Club\, Stones: From Beginning to End!
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! The Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival on Tuesdays 2nd\, 9th\, 16th\, 23rd and 30th June between 10am – 4pm and also on Saturdays 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, and 27th. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.Visitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agates.  With over 5000 mineral specimens in the collection\, large examples are on display  –  an A to Z of many Scottish minerals/rocks   (the pommel stone of serpentine from Iona – part of the Sword of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle – was sourced and shaped by Club Members)  –  and specimens from throughout Europe as the latest theme. \nMembers range from 10 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.Access – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.Toilets – Male\, female and disabled.Parking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk) or free at Ocean Terminal (c 15 minute walk)Nearest trams – Constitution Street (2 minute walk)\,   buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n  \n  \nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2026\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. SUMMARY:Online Talk: Can Scottish Caves Tell a Story? Scientific detective work unravelling the past.
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated talk will look at various scientific approaches and techniques applied to caves and the deposits they contain\, looking for clues as to their formation and past history of changing climates and environments. What do we look for? How do we identify significant changes and how can we date them?\n\nSpeaker: Dr Tim Lawson completed his PhD thesis at the University of Edinburgh in 1983 on the Quaternary geomorphology of Assynt\, one of the classic areas of Scottish Geology. Caves and what they contained formed a significant part of his research. He has written over 60 academic papers on aspects of the geomorphology of this and adjoining areas\, and edited several books. Having retired from a teaching career in 2019\, he has reinvigorated his research interests and is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen.\n\n\n\nFree online talk\, booking required. SUMMARY:Deep Listening to Deep Time
DESCRIPTION:Deep Listening to Deep Time is an immersive\, artist-led listening and making session that invites participants to encounter geological time through slow attention\, touch\, and sound. \nDeveloped from the ongoing project Do Rocks Remember Lava? (DRRL)\, a multisensory curatorial inquiry into geological agency\, deep time\, and non-extractive modes of engagement\, the session extends the project’s sonic and speculative concerns into a participatory\, small-group setting. Where earlier iterations have unfolded through sound\, performance\, and text\, this workshop turns toward collective\, embodied encounter. \nParticipants will be guided through a series of sensory exercises: handling rocks\, making rubbings\, and engaging in forms of “deep listening” informed by both fieldwork and experimental sound practices. Structured across four stages\, the workshop gradually builds toward the creation of a layered collage\, which participants may take home as a trace of their engagement. This material outcome is secondary to the process itself – emerging from sustained attention\, tactile exploration\, and shared experience. \nThe session is organised around key geological processes\, sedimentary layering\, fossilisation\, igneous formation\, and metamorphic transformation\, each approached not as abstract categories\, but as distinct experiences of time. Through touch\, mark-making\, and attentive observation\, participants will explore how stones might hold\, transmit\, or resist memory\, and how different materials register duration\, pressure\, rupture\, and change. \nLive sonic elements will punctuate the workshop\, with contributions from sound artists (TBC). Responding in real time to the materials\, actions\, and atmosphere of the session\, these interventions introduce an additional layer of encounter\, translating geological processes into vibration and duration\, and extending participants’ sensory engagement beyond the purely tactile or visual. \nFossils and traces of organic matter introduce questions of presence and absence\, inviting reflection on what persists and what disappears\, both within the geological record and in lived experience. The session also opens a space to consider contemporary climate change as a disruption of deep time\, where extraction\, erosion\, and acceleration unsettle the temporal scales that geology traditionally holds. \nTogether\, we will ask what it means to listen beyond the human scale\, and how attuning to geological materials might shift our sense of time\, history\, and responsibility. The emphasis remains on process rather than outcome\, cultivating a reflective environment that prioritises care\, curiosity\, and shared attention. \nThe session is gentle and exploratory\, with no prior knowledge of geology or art required. It is suitable for adults and young people aged 14+\, though younger participants are welcome with supervision. \nAccessibility: Please get in touch if cost is a barrier to attending. The event is designed to be as inclusive as possible\, with seated and low-mobility options available throughout. Activities can be adapted for different access needs\, and participation in any element is optional. Materials will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! DESCRIPTION:Join the GeoBus team on a guided walk to explore local rock and fossil highlights on the Fife coast near Kingsbarns. \nWe’ll wander along the Fife Coastal Path route to explore a range of interesting rock types\, features and fossils\, including marks left by fossil trees and tracks left by a giant millipede. \nMeet at Kingsbarns Beach car park (nearest postcode: KY16 8SX) at 10am. Please note that parking is free for up to 2 hours\, but there is a £2 charge to park for longer than that. The full guided walk is approximately 6km and will take 3 hours\, following sections of the coastal path but also going over rocks and along beaches. DESCRIPTION:The Victorian Schoolroom (History of Education Centre) in Newhaven\, Edinburgh is delighted to offer some lively events to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the birth of James Hutton\, the renowned\, Edinburgh-born “Father of Geology”. Working together with academics from the University of Edinburgh and members of the Edinburgh Geological Society\, we are offering a week of free school visits (now fully booked) Victorian-style\, geology “object lessons”\, based on Hutton’s discoveries at Salisbury Crags and will include a guided display of the Schoolroom’s collection of geological specimens. \nThis is followed by a Family Day on Saturday 20th June (10.30 – 3pm) which is free and open to all\, will include the same Victorian-style lessons and visit to the collection as well as geology-inspired crafting events for all ages with professional screen printers and artists. Bring along any interesting finds you have made\, to (hopefully) be identified by geology PhD students. DESCRIPTION:Well-known Edinburgh geologist\, Angus Miller\, will lead a special tercentenary walk in honour of James Hutton (3 June 1726 – 26 March 1797)\, the father of modern geology. This will be on Saturday\, 20 June\, starting at 10.00 from the Portuguese Cannon. \nEntitled ‘The view from Calton Hill: James Hutton’s Edinburgh’\, Angus will take us around the summit of Calton Hill\, reflecting on the role of this landscape in influencing the ideas of Hutton and his friend John Clerk of Eldin. \nAngus Miller writes: “On his death in 1797\, Hutton left an unpublished volume of the Theory of the Earth\, to be illustrated by beautiful\, detailed geological drawings by John Clerk\, including several of Edinburgh. SUMMARY:Online Talk: What's Down there? How Scotland's Caves Are Explored
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated talk will briefly outline the evolution of cave exploration in Britain\, then present a survey of Scotland’s rich natural heritage of underground spaces which\, although they occur in many different types of rock\, will be focussed principally on inland limestone cave systems. Future potential will also be discussed.\n\nSpeaker: Alan Jeffreys founded Scotland’s national caving society – the Grampian Speleological Group – in 1961\, and the Scottish Cave Rescue Organisation in 1966. He has pursued his hobby all over the world as well as in the UK\, making important discoveries at home and abroad. Join us at the British Geological Survey (BGS) to learn more about how it fits into Edinburgh’s volcanic past.  \nExplore rock samples\, view thin sections under the microscope\, and uncover historical records revealing how the city’s Seven Hills were formed — from fiery eruptions in the Devonian to volcanic activity in the Carboniferous. Discover the explosive origins beneath your feet! \nBooking is required and the tour will last 60 minutes\, with an additional 15 minutes allowed for re-setting and changing to the next group. \nEach tour will be a maximum of 20 people and the minimum age for attendance is 9 years old.
