SUMMARY:Siccar Point Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Siccar Point on the Scottish Borders coast is one of the most significant locations in the history of geology. It was here in 1788 that James Hutton predicted\, and then found\, an unconformity – a geological feature that represents a significant gap in the geological record\, and shows how the Earth’s surface is continually recycled and regenerated by natural processes. \nTo celebrate the Tercentenary of James Hutton’s birth\, the Edinburgh Geological Society and partners are creating a new Deep Time Trail at Siccar Point. The trail will lead visitors along the 1.3 km route from the nearest road to the viewpoint above Siccar Point. Along the way\, Hutton’s story gradually unfolds. \nJoin geologists from the Edinburgh Geological Society at Siccar Point to explore the new Deep Time Trail and find out more about James Hutton and this famous location. \nFree – Drop in between 11 am and 4pm each day – no booking required \nAmateur radio operator Paul Temple will be operating from a temporary Special Event Station at Siccar Point using the call sign GB9GEO\, as part of the Parks on the Air programme\, which encourages radio operators to set up temporary stations in designated parks\, enjoying the harmony of nature while making contacts with other radio enthusiasts. These three morning talks will introduce you to the wide range of stone used in Scotland and share current best practice in stone repairs. SUMMARY:Geology of Scotland for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:This new online course is offered for the first time in January and February 2026. It is aimed at anyone who is interested in Scotland and its landscape\, and would like to find out more about the geological underpinnings of this small but interesting country. We’ll explore all aspects of the geology of Scotland\, linking the underlying rocks with today’s landscape\, and discover intimate connections between rocks\, landscape and people. \nThe course assumes no prior knowledge\, and will build an understanding of the basic principles of geology and how these apply to Scotland’s story. Along the way\, there will be lots of pointers to further information and opportunities to ask questions. The course will be followed by a programme of excursions in spring 2026 that will build on the learning of the online course (but these will be bookable on a on an ad-hoc basis and open to all). \nEach online session will last for 75-90 minutes and be broadcast live on Zoom\, with a recording available afterwards for all subscribers. \nMore information and booking \nProgramme \nMonday 12 January 2026\, 7pm Session 1: Scotland’s Journey \nWe’ll start by building a basic understand how the Earth works\, and how the surface of the planet is forever changing due to the Earth’s internal heat and the movement of tectonic plates. We’ll explore how drifting continents over billions of years have led to the creation of Scotland’s rocks: an amazing variety of rock types and ages. \nMonday 19 January\, 7pm Session 2: Sedimentary rocks of Scotland \nOne of the major\, long-lasting processes on the surface of planet Earth is the erosion of land surfaces and the transport of sediment towards the sea. It goes on today\, and it has done for billions of years. This simple process has led to the creation of major new rock volumes in the past\, which are a significant feature of Scotland’s land and surrounding seabed today. \nMonday 26 January 2026 Session 3: Igneous rocks of Scotland \nVolcanoes were here. Significant episodes of volcanic activity have occurred in Scotland in the past\, creating a wide range of igneous rocks in volcanoes and underground accumulation of magma. From Skye\, Staffa\, Glen Coe\, Arran to the craggy hills of central Edinburgh\, this volcanic activity is responsible for much of the most iconic of Scotland’s scenery. \nMonday 02 February\, 7pm Session 4: Metamorphic rocks of Scotland \nMoving continental plates collide\, and make mountains. Intrinsic to this process is the burial\, heating and change to existing rocks to make metamorphic rocks\, such as slate\, schist and gneiss. These rocks underlie a significant proportion of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands\, and are connected to episodes of continental collision in the past\, particularly the episode known as the Caledonian Orogeny 400-500 million years ago. \nMonday 09 February\, 7pm Session 5: Moulding Scotland’s landscape \nScotland’s varied and beautiful landscape is moulded from the variety of rocks that are found here\, and their characteristics that have resulted in erosion of tens\, often hundreds\, of millions of years. Throughout Scotland\, there is a strong connection between the shape of the land and the underlying rocks. \nMonday 16 February\, 7pm Session 6: Scotland’s Story \nWe’ll trace Scotland’s story\, showing how changing global conditions with time have led to the creation of a palimpsest of different rocks over a long period of time\, and how these stories are encoded in the rocks. We will draw on the work of Hugh MacDiarmid\, Rabbie Burns and other writers to bring together the “loose ends of Scotland and … attempt to express the whole” and consider what’s coming next\, before the “rocks melt wi the sun”.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\n\nFossil Walks – every Friday and Saturday (tide dependent). Book online via Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum’s website. \nEvent cost:  \n\nAdult (Aged 14+) – £13.00 plus online booking fees\nConcession (Student\, Over 60s) – £10.00 plus online booking fees\nChild (under 14 years old – must be accompanied by an adult) – £5.50 plus online booking fees\n\nT&Cs \n\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear.\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Starney Bay and St Abbs
DESCRIPTION:Join geologists Alison Tymon and Ann Kellie for an exploration of the geological history of St Abbs.  \nStarney Bay is a quiet cove away from the main footpaths to St Abb’s Head.  The geology is complex as the bay lies on the junction between the St Abbs volcanic vent and the local country rocks\, so much alteration of the rocks has taken place.  The pebbles on the shingle beach are spectacularly different as a result. \nMeet at the viewpoint outside the St Abbs Visitor Centre\, at the top of the hill near the village.  NB. The NTS also has a visitor centre before you reach the village where parking is available\, from where you can follow the path alongside the road to the Visitor Centre.  There are car parks in the village and a bus service from Berwick (235). \nThe route is a 1 km walk along the coastal footpath leads to a steep path down the bay\, with rocks and shingle on the beach. \nGood footwear is essential. Families and dogs are welcome.  Bring magnifying glasses or hand lenses for a detailed look at the pebbles. \nEvent is free but booking is essential. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Katie Strang\, Curator of Mineralogy and Petrology at The Hunterian\, on Thursday 9th October\, 7-9pm at Kelvin Hall\, to discover the 330-million-year history of the University of Glasgow’s Gilbert Scott Building.  \nScotland has one of the richest legacies of traditional buildings and stone structures of any country in the world\, and the rocks beneath our feet are intrinsically linked to our sense of place and identity. This talk will explore the local geology and how these resources have been exploited for building materials around the University Campus\, and ultimately\, how they have shaped Glasgow’s built heritage. \nKatie is a geologist with a degree and MRes from the University of Glasgow\, and a PhD from Durham University. Since finishing her studies\, she has worked in the museum and heritage sector and has research interests in Scotland’s palaeontology\, industrial heritage\, and the mineralogy of lime and related historic materials.  She is the Curator of Mineralogy and Petrology at The Hunterian\, University of Glasgow and the project geologist for the Eco-museum of Scottish Mining Landscapes. She also dedicates most of her free time to volunteering and is currently a Trustee of the Scottish Geology Trust\, where she has been involved with directing the annual Scottish Geology Festival over the last 4 years\, and a Trustee of The Fossil Grove Trust. \nFree\, booking essential. DESCRIPTION:This new\, independent course is offered for the first time in October and November 2025. A series of 6 guided walks and 5 online learning sessions will give a comprehensive introduction to the Geology of Edinburgh. \nWe’ll explore the deep basement rocks the peak through in the centre of the Pentland Hills\, then move on to consider the long story of sediment accumulation in this area\, combined with two episodes of volcanic activity and magma intrusion that form the bedrock underlying the city. We’ll also consider the long period of erosion\, including recent glaciations\, that have shaped the landscape of Edinburgh; and how this huge geological story influences today’s city and has helped developed ideas of how the world works. \nYou can attend the whole course\, or drop in for individual sessions. DESCRIPTION:Head along to Arbroath Signal Tower Museum for lots of hands on activities for geologists of all ages.  \nA selection of rocks\, pebbles and agates from the local Angus Coast will be displayed in the Courtyard in addition to the pebble challenge. \nThere will also be a selection of minerals that fluoresce under ultraviolet light for you to marvel at in the education centre. \nThis is a free drop-in event\, no booking required. Please note\, last admission to the museum is 30 minutes before closing. \nVenue: Signal Tower Museum Courtyard\, Ladyloan\, Arbroath DD11 1PU. \nSignal Tower Museum is located near Arbroath’s picturesque and busy harbour\, in a complex of buildings which were originally used as the shore station and accommodation for the Bell Rock Lighthouse. SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Dob's Linn
DESCRIPTION:A free guided walk to the SSSI site at Dob’s Linn with geologist John Robson – a general geological excursion to view 400 million year old Upper Ordovician and Lower Silurian strata bearing graptolites made famous by Charles Lapworth\, and to the International Stratotype Section of the Ordovician-Silurian Boundary. \nThere may be an option to extend the outing to Loch Skeen\, a scenic uphill walk on a steep path with glaciated landforms and moraines formed by successive ice sheets during the last Ice Age. Sightings of wild goats and Golden Eagles are not uncommon. \nThis walk is ideal for those with no specialist knowledge\, as well as those interested in exploring this “classic” site \nThe site is in a narrow mountain gorge. No facilities are available. Nearest café/toilets are at Moffat\, or the Glen Café\, at St. Mary’s Loch – which may have limited opening times. \nThe route will cover 4km total with a 100m ascent. Optional clamber a short distance up a very steep grass slope for closer view of the Ord/Sil Boundary ‘Golden Spike’.\nTerrain is moderate difficulty depending on the weather\, some slopes are steep and the route covers rough fell-side\, stoney ground\, and crossing small streams. Route is potentially slippery in wet weather –  a walking stick may be an advantage. \nThere is an optional extension to Loch Skene : this adds a further 2.5km / 300m ascent \nMeeting at National Trust for Scotland Car Park – Grey Mare’s Tail  NT 186145 (Small charge unless NTS/NT member if leaving car there) then proceeding to the small mountain gorge. We’ll follow the path up Abbey Craig\, which is a little steep and uneven in places. Book online via Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum’s website. \nEvent cost:  \n\nAdult (Aged 14+) – £13.00 plus online booking fees\nConcession (Student\, Over 60s) – £10.00 plus online booking fees\nChild (under 14 years old – must be accompanied by an adult) – £5.50 plus online booking fees\n\nT&Cs \n\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear.\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour.
