SUMMARY:Exhibition at Paxton House: James Hutton 300 – Landscape\, Rocks and Time
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition will explore James Hutton’s influence on the processes leading to the formation of rocks and on the concept of geological time in a series of interpretation panels\, which tell of Hutton’s life in Edinburgh during the period of the Scottish Enlightenment as well as the development of his Theory of the Earth. His writings explored the processes which produce the rocks and landscapes we see around us\, as well as the idea that geological time was very different from current ideas in the eighteenth century. \nSeveral of James Hutton’s contemporaries were able to travel with him around Scotland\, seeking places where he could find evidence to support his theories. The exhibition includes displays of the rocks that he found at the well-known unconformities in the Isle of Arran\, Jedburgh and Siccar Point\, as well as granite exposures in the Grampians and north-east Scotland. Illustrations of Hutton’s sites\, the so-called ‘Lost Drawings’\, show how he and his contemporaries developed the basic principles of geology.\nIn his early days he took on two family farms situated in the Lammermuir Hills\, aiming to cultivate the inhospitable moors. SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Ground Shakes
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of drawings\, prints and film which explore Scottish Geology along the Highland Boundary and Great Glen fault lines. \nThe Ground Shakes presents new works by Dundee-based artist Calum Wallis\, created over the past two years with funding from Creative Scotland and The Geologists’ Association. \nTracing a geological journey across Scotland\, Wallis follows the Highland Boundary and Great Glen fault lines as markers through a landscape in perpetual flux. Through large-scale drawings\, etchings\, stone lithographs and film\, the exhibition reflects on the dynamic forces that shape the land and our fleeting relationship to deep geological time. \nDeveloped through extensive fieldwork and location-based research from Conic Hill to Loch Eriboll\, Imachar to Wilkhaven\, these works invite us to consider how the shifting ground beneath our feet connects human experience to the slow\, transformative movements of the Earth itself. \nCalum Wallis bio\nCalum grew up in the North Highlands\, where a childhood spent among the hills and trees of Ross Shire and the rocky wonderland north of Ullapool informed a deeply held love of wild places. On moving to Dundee in 2013 to study fine art\, he discovered a passion for drawing as an immediate means of mindfully recording and participating in the landscape around him. \nOver the past 12 years this has since grown into an artistic practice of slow observation\, with repeated visits and close drawing of geological features forming a picture of erosion over the course of a human lifetime. \nCalum has exhibited widely across Scotland and has completed multiple residencies; the most recent being a North Sea voyage delivering the touring exhibition Ebbe and Flow to Norway on the 100 year old herring boat The Swan. \nFree event\, no booking required \n\n \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2026\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. DESCRIPTION:The 200th edition of the Annual Exhibition will be a melting pot of contemporary art from across Scotland and further afield\, with all artworks shown side by side in the Academy’s grand Neoclassical galleries in the heart of Edinburgh. \nThis year’s Exhibition Convenor is artist Annie Cattrell RSA\, assisted by Architecture Convenor Fergus Purdie RSA. This significant year for the RSA also marks the tricentenary of the birth of James Hutton (1726–1797)\, the ‘father of modern geology’. Reflecting on our philosophical and physical foundations (with the building constructed beside ancient volcanic rock)\, Cattrell’s curation will explore the RSA’s rich and layered development over time. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Women on the Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Scotland has been home to many pioneering women geologists\, whose important work has helped us to understand the Earth. Despite this the history of geology has largely been told through the accomplishments of male scientists. The women have often gone unacknowledged and their contributions have been lost to history. \nUntil very recently\, women with an interest in geology had to fight harder than their male contemporaries for access to education and equal recognition. Those who managed to prosper were usually privileged or married into privilege. Many were expected to give up their jobs if they married\, so remained single. \nThis display explores the stories and scientific achievements of some of the pioneering women in Scottish geology\, and their contributions to The Hunterian’s collections. Running from 26th August 2024 – 17th March 2025.  \n“Women on the Rocks” is a new display in Kelvin Hall. SUMMARY:The Lost Villages of East Ayrshire Exhibition at NMMS
DESCRIPTION:The Lost Villages of East Ayrshire Exhibition  – National Mining Museum Scotland.\nSat 03 Aug – Sat 26 Oct. 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. \n‘The ‘miners’ row villages’ in the Ayrshire coalfield are a remarkable and distinctive man-made feature in the landscape and transformed the upland areas where they were set. The Lost Villages of East Ayrshire exhibition is based on an oral history project which gathered voices from the mining communities of East Ayrshire. It features stories from villagers about domestic life\, work and leisure within the Ayrshire coalfield. The exhibition also offers some insights into de-industrialisation and the legacy of the row villages for the the communities today. \nWhilst much of the physical evidence of these villages are mostly gone\, there are still surviving traces of them but more importantly they live on in the memories of the former villages and their families. They are of real importance not only to the Cumnock and Doon Valley area\, but to the industrial history\, social and cultural history and heritage of Scotland as a whole. \nThe exhibition was developed in partnership with East Ayrshire Leisure. The Lost Villages was an oral history project by the Scottish Oral History Centre at the University of Strathclyde\, led by researchers Prof Arthur McIvor and Dr Yvonne McFadden. SUMMARY:James Hutton and his theory of the Earth: free exhibition at Eyemouth Hippodrome
DESCRIPTION:The Hippodrome in Eyemouth is currently hosting an exhibition celebrating the work of James Hutton\, who farmed at Slighhouses during the eighteenth century. The exhibition will be open from 10.00am  – 3.00pm every day until the end of August\, in association with an exhibition on marine life from the Berwickshire Marine Reserve. \nBy knowing the soils\, landscapes and the cliffs of Berwickshire\, James Hutton realised that geological time was far longer than the timeline suggested by Bishop Ussher in 1650. At Siccar Point on the Berwickshire coast he found evidence in the rocks that laid the foundations for our present understanding of the age of the planet. Every year many visitors\, including international geologists\, come to Siccar Point\, which is regarded by many as the most important geological location in the world because it gave rise to Hutton’s insight into deep time. \nThe Eyemouth exhibition was opened by Colin Campbell\, director of the James Hutton Institute\, a scientific organisation based in Scotland. During the autumn\, further related events will take place at the Hippodrome so keep an eye out!

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Mineral Minds: Orkney Geologists Under the Microscope
DESCRIPTION:Mineral Minds: Orkney Geologists Under the Microscope \nStromness Museum’s summer exhibition centres on the work of two under-celebrated geologists: Ted Kellock and Matthew Forster Heddle. Ted Kellock’s collection of over 4000 thin section rock slides has been the subject of a year-long project to digitise the catalogue\, with help from volunteers to transcribe and photograph the slides. The exhibition explains the background to the global collection and showcases beautiful photography of slides viewed under cross-polarized light. The exhibition also features Matthew Forster Heddle\, arguably Scotland’s greatest ever mineralogist\, who was born and brought up in Orkney. A sample of his collection has been loaned from the National Museum of Scotland for the exhibition. Lastly\, the exhibition also contains a section curated by Dounby Primary school p6/7.
