SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Gaps in time at Whiting Ness (Arbroath)
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 30 million years of geological time is missing from the rocks exposed at Whiting Ness! \nJoin geologists from the British Geological Survey on Saturday the 14th September at 3pm for a walk to investigate and understand this intriguing geological site. \nThe sea-cliffs at Whiting Ness expose an impressive angular unconformity – a break in geological time that here represents a halt in the laying down of ancient river-rocks. During the walk we will investigate what happened to create this unconformity as we trace the topography of the landscape preserved in the cliffs\, consider the origin of the river sediments and look for ancient soils preserved in the rock. \nBritish Geological Survey geologists are currently re-surveying the geological maps of the Strathmore area\, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the process of geological surveying and its applications. \nFree\, booking essential. DESCRIPTION:Join the Highland Perthshire Community Land Trust for a field trip to explore the geology around Schiehallion! \nThis trip will take in the glacial history around DC before heading to see the restored Lime Kiln at Tomphubil where there is an informative notice and a small limestone quarry where the limestone was extracted to feed the kiln. \nNext there will be an opportunity to explore the Barytes Spoil heap further down the hill where you’ll learn about the use of barytes for drilling mud for the North Sea wells and also the medical uses for barium meals and enemas. \nFrom there you’ll make your way down the Schiehallion road to visit Braes of Foss and the Maskelyne notice\, and hear about the experiment to ‘weigh the earth’ and of the first land based use of contours. \nNext you’ll get a chance to see the potholes\, dolines and swallow hole just west of Braes of Foss\, before moving on to the Schiehallion limestone pavement with its tremendous Clint’s and grykes and lime loving plants. \nThe final locality will be the Schiehallion Boulder bed erratic to be found at Lassintullich. \n10.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. on Saturday 14th September. Please dress for the weather. Warm clothing\, walking boots and waterproofs are advised. Please bring a packed lunch. \nMeeting point: 10am at the Dùn Coillich car park. Due to parking restrictions at other localities\, participants should first gather at the DC main car park and then arrange to car share with participants for other locations. \nThe DC car park is located on the B846 between Aberfeldy and Tummel Bridge in Perthshire. SUMMARY:Wemyss Caves Pictish Carvings - Full Guided Tour and Museum
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1\,500 years ago. \nLocated on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth\, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols\, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle\, once home to the Earls of Fife. \nThe Tour: The tour covers 5\,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave\, Doo Cave\, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave. \nThis is a coastal landscape with some uneven ground and includes many steps. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing. A full tour to the caves and back is one mile long and usually lasts around an hour and a half. \nHowever\, if you want to avoid steps and would prefer a shorter route\, please get in touch to find out about one of our accessible tours which are particularly suitable for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. \nWe can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking. Book here. \nThe Museum: You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum\, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour\, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm. \nAs well as telling the story of the caves\, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history\, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles. \nToilet facilities and refreshments are available in the Museum. \nParking: Please note that there is no on-site parking in The Haugh\, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes\, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. We can however arrange disabled parking at the Visitor Centre on request. \nDonations: All tours are given free of charge\, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. SUMMARY:Guided walk: Hutton’s Coast – the journey to Siccar Point
DESCRIPTION:Join Angus Miller from Geowalks for a guided walk to Siccar Point. It is Scotland’s most important geological site\, but Siccar Point is tucked away on the rugged coastline of the Scottish Borders\, a hidden gem with beautiful coastal scenery and a rich geological story. \nWe’ll get to the point by following James Hutton’s journey along the coast from Cockburnspath\, gradually travelling back in time through three periods of contrasting sedimentary rocks. This is a varied walk along the coastal path from Cockburnspath to Pease Bay and on to the viewpoint above Siccar Point. The rocks lie at the foot of a steep grassy slope; it is not essential to descend all the way down the slope to see the key features. Distance 6km one-way. \nCost: £20\, free for young people. DESCRIPTION:Join the Geological Society of Glasgow for a Beach Pebble Event at Dunure on Saturday 7th September! \nA chance to enjoy a fun day out examining beach pebbles and agates and learn more about the geology of this Ayrshire coastal location. Dr Clark and other rock doctors will give out information on local rocks\, and then there will be a chance to have a hunt for your own interesting finds on the beach where the rock doctors will be on hand to help identify and give more information on any rocks you find. \nTravel: Own transport. Parking on-site at Kennedy Park £2.50 per vehicle; toilets\, picnic benches and children’s play areas available here. SUMMARY:Wemyss Caves Pictish Carvings - Full Guided Tour and Museum
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1\,500 years ago. \nLocated on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth\, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols\, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle\, once home to the Earls of Fife. \nThe Tour: The tour covers 5\,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave\, Doo Cave\, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave. \nThis is a coastal landscape with some uneven ground and includes many steps. Please bring suitable footwear and clothing. A full tour to the caves and back is one mile long and usually lasts around an hour and a half. \nHowever\, if you want to avoid steps and would prefer a shorter route\, please get in touch to find out about one of our accessible tours which are particularly suitable for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. \nWe can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. We can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking. Book here. \nThe Museum: You are very welcome to spend time looking round our Museum\, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour\, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm. \nAs well as telling the story of the caves\, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history\, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles. \nToilet facilities and refreshments are available in the Museum. \nParking: Please note that there is no on-site parking in The Haugh\, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes\, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. We can however arrange disabled parking at the Visitor Centre on request. \nDonations: All tours are given free of charge\, but as a voluntary organisation we encourage donations from those who can afford it. SUMMARY:Coalscapes III Walk and Workshop Spireslack\, Glenbuck\, East Ayrshire
DESCRIPTION:Join the ‘Scottish Mining Landscapes’ team in association with Forestry and Land Scotland for a free walk exploring the geology\, ecology\, and landscape of the former opencast coaling site at Spireslack\, Glenbuck East Ayrshire followed by a place making art workshop. \nThe Ponesk/Spireslack open cast coaling site was abandoned when Scottish Coal went into liquidation in April 2013. Since then\, the site has been reprofiled\, made safe and access has been improved with ongoing remediation and the establishment of woodland. The Spireslack void ( 85m depth) reveals stunning exposures of carboniferous geology. \nParticipants in this walk and workshop will be invited to rediscover this former extractive landscape through the geology\, ecology and place making art activities (cyanotype prints). Led by members of the National Lottery Heritage Funded Eco-Museum of Scottish Mining Landscapes team\, Katie Strang (Scottish Geology Trust)\, Matt Harding (Botanical Society of Britian and Ireland) and Yvonne Weighand Lyle (YWL Studios) in association with the Foresty and Land Scotland Community Ranger Roddy McTavish. \nNot suitable for under 18 years of age. \nFree – booking essential. DESCRIPTION:What is GeoWeek? \nLaunched in 2018\, GeoWeek aims to encourage ‘active geoscience’ – running events for people all round the UK to experience geology locally. While the hugely successful ‘Geolodia’ in Spain is focused on a single weekend\, GeoWeek spans two so as to include weekday events as well. \nIf you want to learn more about the history of our planet\, and learn how understanding how the Earth works helps us all live on the planet sustainably\, get involved with GeoWeek outdoor activities taking place across the UK between 25th May – 2nd June 2024. You can find events listed on the interactive map here. \nGeoWeek Launch Event: Earth Science for Everyone! \nGeoWeek 2024 will launch at an online event on Thursday 23rd May at 7pm. This online evening event will feature a couple of short talks from experts in Earth Science public engagement\, showcasing different ways to bring geoscience to everyone enthusiastically and informatively. The speakers will then be joined by other Earth Science educators for an informal panel discussion on engaging the public with geoscience – sharing ideas\, experience and advice.
