DESCRIPTION:Well-known Edinburgh geologist\, Angus Miller\, will lead a special tercentenary walk in honour of James Hutton (3 June 1726 – 26 March 1797)\, the father of modern geology. This will be on Saturday\, 20 June\, starting at 10.00 from the Portuguese Cannon. \nEntitled ‘The view from Calton Hill: James Hutton’s Edinburgh’\, Angus will take us around the summit of Calton Hill\, reflecting on the role of this landscape in influencing the ideas of Hutton and his friend John Clerk of Eldin. \nAngus Miller writes: “On his death in 1797\, Hutton left an unpublished volume of the Theory of the Earth\, to be illustrated by beautiful\, detailed geological drawings by John Clerk\, including several of Edinburgh. SUMMARY:Three Hundred Years of James Hutton: Pioneer of Modern Geology and Alumnus of Leiden University
DESCRIPTION:Hutton’s Birthday celebrations at Leiden University \nOn 14 June 2026\, it will be exactly three centuries since James Hutton was born. Widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the history of the earth sciences\, Hutton is celebrated as a founding figure of modern geology. Less widely known—but of special importance to Leiden—is that he completed part of his studies at Leiden University\, earning his doctorate there in 1749. \nIn his groundbreaking book Theory of the Earth (1795)\, Hutton presented the Earth as a dynamic and continuously evolving system. Through his research in Scotland\, he demonstrated that processes such as erosion\, sedimentation\, and volcanism not only shape the world as we know it today but have been operating over millions of years. In doing so\, he fundamentally challenged the prevailing biblical view that the Earth was only a few thousand years old. \nWith his principle of uniformitarianism—the insight that natural processes have operated in the same way throughout geological time—Hutton introduced the revolutionary concept of “deep time”.  He argued that the Earth is unimaginably ancient and shaped by slow\, continuous forces. This idea laid the groundwork for modern geological and evolutionary thought. \nThe Leiden Geological Society proudly highlights that this visionary scientist received part of his academic training in Leiden. His doctorate in 1749 marked a pivotal moment in a life that would ultimately transform our understanding of the planet. \nOn Sunday\, 14 June 2026\, Leiden will commemorate Hutton\, reaffirming its historic role in advancing earth sciences.  This celebration recognises an alumnus whose ideas continue to shape research and education worldwide. \nThe celebration begins at 14:00 (2 pm) in Leiden’s Van der Werfpark. Accompanied by the Red Rose of Lochbuie Pipes and Drums\, participants will take a short walk to Hutton’s former residence at Langebrug 101 for a tribute. The event will conclude with a festive gathering back in the Van der Werfpark. \nEveryone is welcome to this public celebration – feel free to bring family and friends. DESCRIPTION:Explore the coastal rocks of Edinburgh and get hands-on with this mindful rock felting activity\, where we’ll create cozy woollen stones. \nWe’ll meet at Granton Beach\, where we’ll explore some of the local rocks that we find. \nWhile the event is part of the Scottish Geology Festival\, you don’t need to a rock expert\, it’s more about getting outdoors\, learning a new skill\, and appreciating the beauty of the world around us. \nParticipants will be invited to take a deeper look at a specific stone and really get to know them. In keeping with the theme of this year’s Scottish Geology Festival – 300 Years of Deep Time – we’ll think about what we can learn from these rocks. We’ll then learn the technique of wet felting\, and set to work creating beautiful felted stones from our finds. DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to discover Edinburgh’s volcano during your walk in Holyrood Park\, and to celebrate the 300th Birthday of James Hutton\, the father of modern geology\, in the place where many of his crucial observations were made! \nTake a geological walk through the 340 million year history of Arthur’s Seat\, from tropical lagoons to volcanic eruptions\, and from glacial erosion to the Scottish Enlightenment. At this drop-in event\, SGT geologists and Holyrood Park Rangers will interpret the landscape and explain the geology which creates this unique feature in the heart of the city. Visit our stand adjacent to the Holyrood Palace carpark and learn about fossils originating from the time that the Arthur’s Seat volcano was erupting. Then pick up a map of the park\, and look out for our volunteers (wearing high-vis jackets and blue tee shirts) who will be stationed at various localities and will be able to explain the geological features found at each location. Meanwhile\, Holyrood Park Rangers will lead a range of fun geology experiments and activities in the Holyrood Park Education Centre. \nAs this is a self-guided event\, open to anyone visiting the park\, visitors should consider route planning appropriate to their level of ability and the weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:Join the Geological Society of Glasgow for a field trip to Burnmouth \nThe rocks exposed along the foreshore at Burnmouth in the Scottish Borders are early Carboniferous in age and belong to the Ballagan Formation. They were deposited in a low-lying vegetated coastal wetland around 350 million years ago\, when Scotland as we know it was a very different place! During this time we were situated at low latitudes close to the equator and experienced a hot and humid climate. The area was subject to vast droughts and flooding\, sea levels fluctuated and sandy river channels meandered across the land. It was in this setting that we also saw the first tetrapods (four-limbed animals with backbones) making their way on to the land. Originally these rocks were laid down on a relatively flat surface and they stayed this way until a period of significant tectonic activity and continental collision known as the Varsican orogeny\, which happened around 200 million years ago. These intense tectonic forces caused the rocks at Burnmouth to be uplifted\, tilted and faulted\, eventually resulting in the striking near vertical orientation we will see on the shore today! \nMinibus leaving Molema building\, Lilibank Gardens\, Glasgow 8.30am – returning around 6.30pm \nActivity level: Moderate – “People with a moderate level of fitness.” This trip is on slippery rocks with a fair amount of scrambling involved \n£30.00 per person for members (£35.00 non-members). DESCRIPTION:In order to help celebrate Hutton’s Tercentenary\, a group of church bell ringers from various parts of England and Scotland will meet on Wednesday 3rd June to ring the eight bells at Haddington church\, East Lothian. The ringing will start at about 10.30am and continue without a break for three hours. SUMMARY:Siccar Point Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Siccar Point on the Scottish Borders coast is one of the most significant locations in the history of geology. It was here in 1788 that James Hutton predicted\, and then found\, an unconformity – a geological feature that represents a significant gap in the geological record\, and shows how the Earth’s surface is continually recycled and regenerated by natural processes. \nTo celebrate the Tercentenary of James Hutton’s birth\, the Edinburgh Geological Society and partners are creating a new Deep Time Trail at Siccar Point. The trail will lead visitors along the 1.3 km route from the nearest road to the viewpoint above Siccar Point. Along the way\, Hutton’s story gradually unfolds. \nJoin geologists from the Edinburgh Geological Society at Siccar Point to explore the new Deep Time Trail and find out more about James Hutton and this famous location. \nFree – Drop in between 11 am and 4pm each day – no booking required \nAmateur radio operator Paul Temple will be operating from a temporary Special Event Station at Siccar Point using the call sign GB9GEO\, as part of the Parks on the Air programme\, which encourages radio operators to set up temporary stations in designated parks\, enjoying the harmony of nature while making contacts with other radio enthusiasts. DESCRIPTION:Please note this walk was originally scheduled to take place on the 4th of October however\, due to the severe weathering warnings in force\, it has been rescheduled and will now take place on the 25th October. \nJoin Margaret Greene\, President – Geological Society of Glasgow\, for a guided walk to explore over 300 million years of history around Rouken Glen Park. Discover rocks deposited at a time when Scotland was close to the equator and the area was part of a huge coastal plain on the edge of a shallow sea\, experiencing a hot\, tropical and humid climate. \nThe walk will follow the leaflet on the geology of the park produced by East Renfrewshire and available on the Glasgow Geological Society website. \nSaturday 25th October at 11am. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk along Cromarty beach with an experienced guide to discover the rocks\, fossils\, and geological formations that captivated Hugh Miller… \n\nTravel back to a time 140 million years before the first dinosaur to discover a Scotland below the equator; one where strange ancient fish swam in a lake that covered almost all of the Highlands!\nTake part in active citizen science as we search for fossils\, and have your name go alongside any new discoveries made and displayed at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum!\nSee Cromarty beach in a new light as we look at the geological processes that have shaped this famous stretch of coastline!\n\nFossil Walks – every Friday and Saturday (tide dependent). Book online via Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Museum’s website. \nEvent cost:  \n\nAdult (Aged 14+) – £13.00 plus online booking fees\nConcession (Student\, Over 60s) – £10.00 plus online booking fees\nChild (under 14 years old – must be accompanied by an adult) – £5.50 plus online booking fees\n\nT&Cs \n\nTours are subject to tide times\, taking place during either a low or falling tide. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum – please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.\nAs Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk – particularly outdoor\, waterproof footwear.\nTours will last approx. 90 minutes – we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. Toilet facilities are available at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum.\nPlease note as Cromarty experiences slow erosion that fossils are not guaranteed on every tour.\nOnly service and guide dogs are permitted on our Fossil Walks.\nAll attendees under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian and cannot be left unattended during the walks.\n\nOur fossil walks will be operating in compliance with the Scottish Fossil Code. Therefore fossils collected from the beach will remain at Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Museum on display for the duration of one month before being returned to the beach. \nWe strongly recommend reading over the Scottish Fossil Code before taking part in our walk. \nCost: £13 per person. DESCRIPTION:Join the British Geological Survey (BGS) for a guided 2-hour walk around Arthur’s Seat\, Edinburgh’s iconic extinct volcano. \nLed by BGS geologists\, this walk explores the fascinating volcanic and glacial history of the area\, including lava flows\, dolerite intrusions\, and evidence of Ice Age activity. \nAlong the route\, participants will gain insights into how the landscape was formed and shaped over millions of years\, with stops at key geological features and viewpoints. \nSuitable for most fitness levels\, will include uphill mostly on paths.
