SUMMARY:Online Talk: Geological Thin Section Preparation with Logitech LTD
DESCRIPTION:Discover the intricate structures of rocks and soils through thin sections in this interactive webinar.\n\nLogitech’s expert team\, with over 50 years of experience\, will demonstrate the processes live in the lab\, including trimming\, grinding\, and polishing\, for both standard and large-format samples.\n\nThey’ll also highlight a recent collaboration with Princeton University\, where large-format sections were produced as both research tools and striking geological displays.\n\nWhether you’re a geoscientist\, student\, or enthusiast\, this session showcases how careful preparation reveals the microscopic details and natural beauty of geological materials\, blending science\, craft\, and artistry.\n\nFree event\, but registration required. SUMMARY:Course: The Geology of Edinburgh
DESCRIPTION:This new\, independent course is offered for the first time in October and November 2025. A series of 6 guided walks and 5 online learning sessions will give a comprehensive introduction to the Geology of Edinburgh. \nWe’ll explore the deep basement rocks the peak through in the centre of the Pentland Hills\, then move on to consider the long story of sediment accumulation in this area\, combined with two episodes of volcanic activity and magma intrusion that form the bedrock underlying the city. We’ll also consider the long period of erosion\, including recent glaciations\, that have shaped the landscape of Edinburgh; and how this huge geological story influences today’s city and has helped developed ideas of how the world works. \nYou can attend the whole course\, or drop in for individual sessions. The 90-minute online sessions will be recorded for later viewing. Cost £15 per session\, £60 for all 5 online sessions (live and recorded)\, or £120 for all 11 sessions. The course is open to all\, you don’t need any prior knowledge or to do any homework; and it will be an informal course with plenty of time to ask questions and get into more detail if you like. \nProgramme \nWednesday 08 October\, 10:00 – Pentland Hills – the oldest rocks (walk)\nMonday 13 October\, 19:00 – Online session 1: Introduction to the geology of Edinburgh\nFriday 17 October\, 10:00 – Devonian volcanic activity\, Braid and Blackford Hills (walk)\nMonday 20 October\, 19:00 – Online session 2: Formation of the Old Red Sandstone & the volcanoes of the Pentland Hills\nFriday 24 October\, 10:00 – Old Red Sandstone and younger sedimentary rocks\, Dunbar\, East Lothian (walk)\nMonday 27 October\, 19:00 – Online session 3: Sedimentary basins in the Carboniferous\nThursday 30 October\, 10:00 – Carboniferous sedimentary rocks along the River North Esk\, Roslin (walk)\nMonday 03 November\, 19:00 – Online session 4: Volcanoes and intrusions in the Carboniferous\nFriday 07 November\, 10:00 – Carboniferous volcanic and intrusive rocks in Holyrood Park (walk)\nMonday 10 November\, 19:00 – Online session 5: Erosion and landscape formation\nThursday 13 November\, 10:00 – Erosion and landscape formation\, Water of Leith (walk) \nBooking essential: geowalks.scot/geology-courses/ \n\n \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2025\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust.
