SUMMARY:Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club - Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! The Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival on Saturdays 7th\, 14th\, 21st and 28th September between 10am – 4pm and also on Tuesdays 3rd\, 10th\, 17th\, and 24th. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.\nVisitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agate\, and with over 5000 specimens in the collection\, large examples are shown and an A to Z of many Scottish minerals. \nMembers range from 0 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.\nAccess – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.\nToilets – Male\, female and disabled.\nParking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk).\nNearest buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2024\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust. DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s Scottish Geology Festival\, the Scottish Deer Centre and Wildlife Park will be holding a rock\, mineral and fossil weekend. In conjunction with the Scottish Geology Trust\, a wide range of examples of what can be found in Scotland will be displayed\, much of it from local sources. Fossils older than dinosaurs\, agates from local beaches and fields and minerals that fluoresce under ultraviolet light. \nVolunteers from the Scottish Geology Trust will be available for advice and guidance on Saturday the 28th and Sunday the 29th September from 10am-4pm. Bring your own rocks along for show and tell\, or identification. \nExcellent parking and disabled access. Easy walking\, 200-300 metres\, cafe and toilets. \nDrop-in event\, no booking required. He started his career on several Aberdeenshire estates before joining the Department of Agriculture in Edinburgh. In 1996 he migrated south of the border as Chief Surveyor with English Nature. DESCRIPTION:The West of Scotland Mineral and Lapidary Society was founded in 1966 by a group of people who had a common interest in collecting\, studying\, and polishing semi-precious stones. For the last 25 years the Society’s clubroom has been based in Knightswood Community Centre\, Knightswood\, Glasgow\, G13 3DD. \nThe primary aim of the Society is to foster an interest in natural minerals\, Lapidary (the cutting\, shaping\, and polishing of stones) and in the craftmanship required both for lapidary and its associated crafts on a non-commercial basis. The Society has now extended its skillset to include enamelling and some members silversmith to set their stones. \nTo celebrate this year’s Scottish Geology Festival\, the WSMLS are opening their workshop to interested visitors on the above dates and times when members are working. You can head along to discover the art of lapidary and find out how to cut\, shape\, and polish beautiful stones and gems. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! DESCRIPTION:Explore rocks from both creative and scientific points of view with the guidance of science artist Vojta Hýbl of Rocks on Paper.\nStart your experience by touring the Earth Systems collections at National Museums Collection Centre\, guided by knowledgeable Natural Sciences curators. You will learn all about the history\, diversity\, and importance of geology in Scotland while viewing various geological specimens which you can use as inspiration. Vojta will then take you through the basics of doing your own illustration of a rock specimen and show you how to identify it based on careful observations of its features. No art experience is necessary. \nWorkshop will be held on 24th September at 10:00 and will last 2.5 hours (including tour). To be held at National Museums Collection Centre\, 242 West Granton Road\, EH5 1JA. \nAccessibility: NMCC buildings are wheelchair accessible. He published ‘The Fossil Fishes of Caithness’\, followed by a second edition ‘The Fossil Fishes of North Scotland’. His large collection of fossils\, mainly from the North of Scotland\, are now held at the Castletown Heritage Centre and this event (in coordination with the 2024 Doors Open Days Scotland weekend) will reveal the beginnings of their display at the centre. DESCRIPTION:At Auchmithie you can see incredible examples of sandstone conglomerate cliffs formed by a giant Mississippi sized river that once flowed over vast parts of the land over 370 million years ago. As part of the Scottish Geology Festival 2024\, The Scottish Geology Trust\, supported by Auchmithie Village Hall\, are presenting a display of local rocks and fossils! \nThere will be accessible and informative displays of local stones in Auchmithie Village Hall on both Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September. This is a drop in event from 10am – 4pm each day. \nFor the more adventurous you can head down to the beach for a pebble event both days to meet with geologists and SGT volunteers. You’ll be able to talk to them about the type of stones found on the beach and the stories behind how they were formed. The beach event is a drop-in event between 10pm – 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday\, there is no need to book\, but get in touch with the organiser if you have any questions. In the event of bad weather\, the event may be cancelled or postponed – please check with the organiser on the day. \nThere will also be a display of minerals that fluoresce under UV light! \nThe road to the hall is smooth and okay for wheelchairs\, but the actual beach is not wheelchair accessible. There is also access to the beach via 37 steps from the middle of the village. These are steep and can be slippery when wet\, sensible footwear is recommended. Supported by Historic Environment Scotland\, the Isle of Luing is opening a new chapter in its history. Sixty years after the last slate quarry closed at Cullipool\, plans are afoot to restart the production of roofing slates as a community business\, creating jobs and helping to revive the island economy. \nThe weekend festival is for people of all ages interested in archaeology\, history\, geology\, crafts and music. Starting on Friday afternoon and ending on Sunday afternoon\, the festival includes: \n\nWalks\, talks and visits\, and boat trips round Luing. See\, experience and learn about the island’s history\, including hill-top forts\, Medieval boat graffiti and stunning slate quarries.\nJoin in craft workshops – ‘painting on slate’ and ‘crafting with stone’ for adults and children. DESCRIPTION:At Auchmithie you can see incredible examples of sandstone conglomerate cliffs formed by a giant Mississippi sized river that once flowed over vast parts of the land over 370 million years ago. As part of the Scottish Geology Festival 2024\, The Scottish Geology Trust\, supported by Auchmithie Village Hall\, are presenting a display of local rocks and fossils! \nThere will be accessible and informative displays of local stones in Auchmithie Village Hall on both Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September. This is a drop in event from 10am – 4pm each day. \nFor the more adventurous you can head down to the beach for a pebble event both days to meet with geologists and SGT volunteers. You’ll be able to talk to them about the type of stones found on the beach and the stories behind how they were formed. The beach event is a drop-in event between 10pm – 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday\, there is no need to book\, but get in touch with the organiser if you have any questions. In the event of bad weather\, the event may be cancelled or postponed – please check with the organiser on the day. \nThere will also be a display of minerals that fluoresce under UV light! \nThe road is smooth and okay for wheelchairs\, but access onto the actual beach is not accessible. There is also access to the beach via 37 steps from the middle of the village. These are steep and can be slippery when wet\, sensible footwear is recommended. Sixty years after the last slate quarry closed at Cullipool\, plans are afoot to restart the production of roofing slates as a community business\, creating jobs and helping to revive the island economy. \nThe weekend festival is for people of all ages interested in archaeology\, history\, geology\, crafts and music. Starting on Friday afternoon and ending on Sunday afternoon\, the festival includes: \n\nWalks\, talks and visits\, and boat trips round Luing. See\, experience and learn about the island’s history\, including hill-top forts\, Medieval boat graffiti and stunning slate quarries.\nJoin in craft workshops – ‘painting on slate’ and ‘crafting with stone’ for adults and children. The Society has now extended its skillset to include enamelling and some members silversmith to set their stones. \nTo celebrate this year’s Scottish Geology Festival\, the WSMLS are opening their workshop to interested visitors on the above dates and times when members are working. You can head along to discover the art of lapidary and find out how to cut\, shape\, and polish beautiful stones and gems. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people craft\, cut\, shape and polish rough stones or minerals and turn them into beautiful creations that can be used as jewellery or ornaments? Now is your chance to find out! The Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club will be holding Open Days throughout the Festival on Saturdays 7th\, 14th\, 21st and 28th September between 10am – 4pm and also on Tuesdays 3rd\, 10th\, 17th\, and 24th. \nFounded in 1958\, in the oldest Club of its type in Britain\, our aim is to ‘encourage an interest in natural minerals and the craftsmanship related to them\, on a non-commercial basis’.\nVisitors can view these skills as Members work on stones\, facet gemstones or do silverwork during the normal working hours. \nDisplay areas also show photographs of Scottish locations with examples of Members’ finished work\, particularly Scottish agate\, and with over 5000 specimens in the collection\, large examples are shown and an A to Z of many Scottish minerals. \nMembers range from 0 to 90+ years – suited to family groups – general interest\, students to specialist professionals.\nAccess – all on ground level suitable for wheelchair\, pram.\nToilets – Male\, female and disabled.\nParking – limited\, possible in in local streets or by Leith Links (c 5 minute walk).\nNearest buses – Junction Street\, foot of Easter Road/ Leith Walk\, or Commercial Street\, Leith (all 10 to 15 minute walk) \nFree drop-in event\, no booking required \n\n \n  \n\nAn event in the Scottish Geology Festival 2024\, organised by the Scottish Geology Trust.
