Join volunteers from the Tombstones and Tales At Dunfermline Abbey Churchyards Group for a guided walk around Dunfermline Abbey Churchyards! This guided walk will look at the geology of the different gravestones and structures found within the grounds of Dunfermline Abbey Churchyard. From granite formed from huge molten magma chambers deep in the Earth’s crust, to ancient river systems that once dominated parts of Fife, to limestones formed in tropical marine seas – there’s a little bit of everything. You’ll also hear some fascinating history about the people who now rest there; from the romantic, to the entrepreneurial, to the downright tragic. Come along to learn about some fantastic urban geology and history in the heart of Dunfermline City Centre!
The tour will be run twice each lasting approximately 45 minutes; the first one starting at 5:30pm, and the second at 6:30pm. Meet at the St Catherine’s Wynd entrance (Dunfermline KY12 7NA) on the east side of the Abbey Church at your booked time. The walk will be mostly on paths, with some crossing of grassy areas. Sturdy footwear is recommended, along with weather appropriate clothing.
