Guided field trip of the Hopeman Sandstone Formation, with the OUGS

Purpose of excursion: to examine features and trace fossils of the late Permian Hopeman Sandstone Formation. This trip is in collaboration with the Open University Geological Society (OUGS) and tickets must be booked in advance. The trip will look at relicts of aeolian barchan and proposed star dunes before examining a stretch of coastline exhibiting small faults, a range of soft sediment deformation features, fluvial and lacustrine sandstones, abandoned millstones and quarries, trace fossils and other sedimentary features. In the afternoon there will be an opportunity to visit Clashach Quarry, or the footprint slabs display area, to examine fossilised reptile footprints and if time allows recently discovered glacial features in the quarry. And afterwards a walk to the coast via a short path to visit an old sandstone quarry, the old Clashach port, Jock Muldoon’s Cave and see some beautifully displayed sandstone cross- bedding.
