As part of this Year’s Outwith Festival and Scottish Geology Festival join Tombstones and Tales @ Dunfermline Abbey Churchyards for a range of activities including some Graveyard Geology!
Graveyards rock and a chip off the old block – Join geologist Dr Katie Strang and apprentice stonemason Harry Maxwell between 10:30am – 3:30pm for an interactive handling session on gravestone geology and stone carving. We will look at how different stones were created and find out how their different properties influence how they survive against time and the elements.
Drawin’ of The Dead – There’s also the opportunity to join illustrator Clare Forrest for a light-hearted drop-in activity between 10:30am – 3:30pm at the Abbey Churchyards. In this unique historical setting you will have the chance to sketch and learn more about gravestone designs and symbols. No prior skill required, just an enthusiasm for drawing!
‘Graveyard Treasure Trail’ – self-guided activity for families! Can you follow the clues and use the graveyard treasure map to find the different points of interest? Collect your copy of this fun self-guided activity between 10.30 am – 3.30pm. Don’t forget to hand in your answers for the chance of winning a prize!
The Tombstones and Tales Group will also be running graveyard tours (starting at 1.00 pm, 1.45 pm, 2.00 pm, 2.15 pm) where you’ll get to find out more about Dunfermline’s history from the people buried here. Tours are sold out.
